Paper based inlket substrates can, in theory, be recycled, but that also depends on what country you live in.

Most all of the Matte papers out there should be fine to recycle. Some; however have a P.E. barrier in them. Look for indicators like wet strength etc., if in doubt ask your supplier for an MSDS sheet.

Clay type coatings should be fine and it is rare that you would find that in a proofing grade media anyway. The RC/oil based products aka (photobase) not only have a resin back but most have a petro-based ink barrier in addition to prevent bleed through. Its kind of a necessary evil.

We were the first U.S. paper company to launch an FSC proofing product that does meet the criteria to be recyclable and has been quite successful.

We have also implemented a series of 100% recyclable media's in the Photo market with our INNOVA papers.

Interestingly enough, as the aqueous market get greener the growing solvent market is exploding with PVC banner... One step forward 3 steps back...
