    Default Illustrator eps file errors

    Here's a challenge for someone.
I've been messing with this for days.
Maybe someone can figure this out.
I have a simple Illus. file saved out of CS4. It's a house and a leaf.
When I place it in QX or Indd. I get these errors. I've gotten them to work
some times. It's not consistent tho.
I'll attach the files if someone wants a shot at them.
I need it to work in Qx 7. I've sent along the log reports I'm getting.
When I view them in Indd at HiRes they come up gray. I've resaved; re-drew the
house etc. Like I say I've spent some time on them. I don't know if its the way I'm saving them?

    thanks

    Greetings,

Unfortunately, I could not duplicate your problem. I was able to place both of your .eps files into InDesign without incident. Additionally, I do not have Quark, so could not test that.

I am involved in flexographic printing and I do not work a lot in either program since neither are my 1st choice when making art for flexo. However, when I do work in InDesign and have a simple graphic such as yours, I prefer to copy it to clipboard (MAC) from Illustrator and paste it into InDesign. While this tip is probably of no help with your desire to work in Quark, it may help get these files into InDesign without errors occurring.

    Greetings,

After my last post, I read your log, should have done that first, sorry. Your problem is not in placing the files, but exporting them as PDF files.

I noticed that the custom colors you created in Illustrator include k=10 1 and K=24 1. I made a duplicate of your .eps files and changed the color name so K=10 and K=24. When I import either of those files into InDesign I can make a PDF without incident. However, when I import one of your files along with my files, I also receive an error when trying to make a PDF file from InDesign.

Why the color name would make a difference - ??? - but in my limited test it did.

I have no desire to work in Qx. but it wasn't QX fault this time.
I'm forced to by this one client.
I think he's going to move to Indd soon anyway.
Once again I was able to get it to distill this time.
But when I distill I'm getting this:

    Acrobat Distiller 9.0.0
Started: Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 12:15 PM
    Adobe PostScript software version: 3018.101
    CID support library initialization completed.

    Error in /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/PDFX4 2008.joboptions:
    /CheckCompliance out of range
    Error in /Users/jeffdreiling/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/Trueflow_PDFX4_1.3US.joboptions:
    /CheckCompliance out of range
    Distilling: 20FXD10.ps

    Destination: /Users/jeffdreiling/Desktop/LIVE JOBS/7286_Punch/PDF_output/20FXD10.pdf
    Adobe PDF Settings: /Users/jeffdreiling/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings/Trueflow.joboptions
    Distill Time: 10 seconds (00:00:10)
    **** End of Job ****

And attached is what it looks like.

I can take that white box out with pitstop; but I just don't understand
    what's causing it.

    thanks for the reply

    Greetings,

I made a .ps file of the InDesign file with your .eps placed and then a .ps file of an InDesign file with my .eps file (with changed color names) placed.

I can distill the .ps file that has my .eps file using Distiller (v9.3.2), but I error out when trying to distill the .ps file with your .eps.

Still seems like the color name is "pissing" something off.

Note, if you open the flyout menu from the swatches pannel, and choose "add used colours" you will see 3 colours appearingScreen shot 2010-06-29 at 21.30.12.png

I suspect that this could be the problem. The CMYK black seems the rouge.
at closer inspection, using the appearance panel i find there are two effects.

The house has a merge effect applied to it. (it is not a simple object but a group for some reason)
The leaf a drop shadow with 0% opacity of that strange black.

I suspect these are the effects that are not distiller savy.
Try flattening appearance (or removing the effects since they actually have no puropse except keep us in a job )

    Thats interesting.
I sep all the spot colors in Illus.
I ended up getting it to work. But had to take out
the white box behind it. Then it didn't trap right; it was acting
as tho the two elements were stroked, so it had a thin line.
So, with pitstop I released the mask that Qx must have put in it
when I made the PDF. Made the black outline of the
mask "none". Then re-trapped it and its fine.
Still not making any sense to me why a simple file would do that.
From the orig. I did need to use the "join" option.
But thanks for looking at it Bill.

Default @rande did you try removing the drop shadow?

    Did you read my post?
remove the drop shadow effect, it causes transparency flatteing and that explains your white square!

I prefer placing .ai files/images into indesign template. Never have a problem. .eps placed into indesign, sometimes problems ripping, error codes about it binary information.

No, I missed it. But in the beginning it did have a shadow and the house was complicated.
I basically rebuilt the house and took the shadow off the leaf. What I ended up with should have been
real simple. I got rid of all the colors because that was in th errors. You're explaining how it was for sure,
but that should have all been fixed. Qx do not deal with shadows well at all. But these files choked in Indd. One of the ways I did get one thu was flatten art work like you were saying. So all good suggestion.
I don't know how you saw the original problems but in the end I used the Illus. files and still had a white
box behind the house and had to take it out with pitstop. And I don't think it ever had a shadow.
So I don't know why it was acting the way it was except it was remembering things about the orig.?

    Thanks for the response Lukas
