Default Error Renaming File or Folder

We have been getting the following error when trying to rename or move random PDF files. It isn't a consistent error and seems to happen to different people at different times. We have checked users, administrators even the people who created them. Any ideas?

"Cannot rename "FILE NAME": It is being used by another person or program.
Close any other programs that might be using the file and try again."

We have double checked security rights of individuals involved. We are certain that no one here has it open and can't seem to pinpoint what would drive this on certain PDF's.

The reason is most likely not Adobe.
It can be anything, depends on how your WF is setup.
As a example, it can be a automated WF who is holding the file or if your working on a server (not on your own disk) it can be that there is a other software indexing dat server.

So bottom line you will have to check every thing in you organization.

If you have any sort of Archive/Incremental backup going on or a virus scan, that will do it as well.

Does it let you rename or move it after a while?

Sometimes we can rename after a while, other times we can't. It seems so sporadic, really confusing!

Try making sure that the folder that contains the file you're trying to rename isn't open on any other computers. May work, may not.
By the time I walk out of here, I'm going to be a lean, mean, prepress machine...

I have seen where the permissions on the server has become corrupt. I have also seen it when someone upstream (preflight) has opened a file and crashed and the file is locked until that persons application has restarted.
