Vectorize Images in Illustrator

I have a PDF that I need to vectorize. Live trace only works for very simple images. The PDF contains all text basically and I want a quicker way to vectorize it than using the pen tool to recreate it. How can I do this?

As you say, raster images/photos are trickier and there is Illustrator live trace, among other methods to vectorize raster images.
