Default Degrava DP 8500 digital press

Does anybody have any experience of the Degrava DP 8500 digital press? You can see it here [http://www.degrava.com/products_degrava8500.htm]

This continuous feed machine is designed to print labels and tags on a range of substrates. It is based on a re-engineered Oki machine and is powered by an Onyx RIP.

We supply Oki digital presses to printers in Ireland and we are seriously considering taking the dealership for this press in Ireland. Any feedback on Degrava would be most welcome.

You may want to test the Variable Data capabilities on the ONYX RIP. On the info sheet for this RIP (at least I think this is the RIP) http://www.onyxgfx.com/solutions_productionhouse.html is says something about a variable data tool, but there is no mention of any optimizations for VDP. What is this tool? You will want to make sure that the RIP can keep up with the print engine on the type of jobs purchasers of the RIP will use. Otherwise, there may be a situation where the press speed or quality is forsaken on VDP jobs. Most jobs will be VDP on a label printer so this is really important.

Thanks for your response Printologist, we will keep this in mind. Does anybody have any feedback on the machine itself and its performance good, bad or indifferent? I look forward to any info.

We have 2 8500's used mainly for one and two color short run jobs, and a Indigo WS4500 for 4 color short runs.

Is anyone looking into the new DP 9500 and doing any testing?

why do you use them for 1-2 color jobs only? Do you know maybe the cost of print and cost of ownership? How does the machine cut the labels? Need any special material? Print quality?

The indigo is capable of maintaining colors better and is profiled to the flexo presses. The 1 and 2 color jobs that are done on the Degrava are generally producing a label for example with blue and black ink versus PMS 280 and black requirements and have less coverage. The web is also narrower on the Degrava at 8.25 inches max vs the 13 inch on the indigo. The indigo also has 2x the speed.

We have enough web and sheet indigo's in locations that they are pooled to drive down the click rate, for process 4-color it is cheaper on the indigo. While the indigo can do individual spot PMS colors we don't have the time in this location to switch in and out. For us to run a one or two color job in process on the indigo we would use 4-clicks, for the smaller coverage less color critical it is cheaper to use the Degrava. The indigo has a nearline finishing machine from Delta Industrial that can laminate, UV coat, die cut, perf, sheet, slit, and rewind. The 2 Degrava's use one smaller tabletop die cutter to finish the labels.

Most of the label stocks we use work in the Degrava but it is an Xerographic dry toner process so you do have a heater fuser to go through some film/synthetic material may not work.

What type of tabletop die cutter do you use to finish the labels when using Degrava DP8500?

    Default Degrava die cutter

We have two hot stamp presses to finish our labels but I have seen the Austik die cutter / lamination system used with good success. I would stay away from any DFS system.

Thanks. What's the disadvantage of DFS systems? Do you know where can I look for used Austik systems?
