Lacquer finishing - color cards

Hi guys,

I came across a supplier which uses lacquer as a finishing. They mostly create color cards, but mentioned that manually adjusted color cards are finished with lacquer varnish.

Does anybody know this process?

I reserached a bit and it seems that there are barely nobody who use this way to finish colors. Is environmental regulations issue? Is there better and perhaps cheaper way to do such printing?
