Plate wearing and paperdust on plate

We have a problem with plate wearing. The plates is worn out after 10.000 copies. We have checked the foundation and its good roller settings is good too. The plates have a thin layer of paperdust after a while in production.
What can the problem be?
Can it be a calcium problem?

Heres a picture of the plate.

Looking for used printer blankets

Hi everyone,
I am a ceramic artist from Washington State.

I am looking for used printing blankets to use as a work surface for working in clay. The back smooth surface is great for working with clay and it doesn't stick to clay. As you can see I don't care about the printing condition of the blanket as I am not using it for printing purposes.

Since people in this forum go through these blankets and probably toss them out, I was hoping to reuse them for my purpose. Much better than going into a landfill.

I am hoping to find someone local in the Seattle - Tacoma area in Washington State. If not then I would consider paying for shipping.
Thank you very much for your time.

Denistometer V/S Spectrophotometer

Hi,

I am not sure that this point was discussed before or not. Which device should be better to the newspaper pressroom: densitomter or spectrophotometer? At present we are scanning gray bar (not black) on the color pages and try to keep the C, M and Y density values within given specification on the presses. We use status T (absolute) on densitometer. It happens that due to different shades of paper: same density may have different L, a and b values. Also spectrophotometer may be useful to check the Delta E between proofs and printed copies and also 'b' value of the paper. It would be great to have some information on which device we should apply and why?

Thanks.

Vision System after Processor of CtP

Hi,

I am looking for any vendor: who provide the system (software/ hardware): to check the exposed and processed plate with the ripped file (G4 tiff file: separated in each color): which is sending to the CtP device. Reason is to check the processed images and plate quality with the original file. At present we have tone reprodution test form and also worked with Nela PQM marks. We need to know about the processed image area. It would be great if you suggest me some Vendor name or ideas or SOP to go through.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Prinergy 5.1.2.3/Workshop/Acrobat Plugins on Mac OS 10.8

Just purchased a new imac with Mountain Lion.
I succeeded in getting Workshop from Prinergy 5.1 working on it, but I can't get the Prinergy Acrobat plugins to load in Acrobat 9 or X.
To load workshop you can't use the installer, it won't function, so the workaround was copying the Prinergy folder from an older OS.
I downloaded the plugins supposedly for Acrobat XI but they won't load on OS 10.8. They will load on 10.6 though.
Kodak is not a big help with this, they want me to update to Prinergy 5.3, but all I need is the acrobat plugins.
Anyone have any info about this?

Thanks

Does anyone use Curve2 or Curve3 and use Spot On to verify a calibration once completing a G7 run?

Does anyone else get radically different between the two results as far as the Delta E readings?

Just curious.

In the last month we've had two jobs now "go bad". In both cases there is text that was originally there that is now not. In the first it is page numbers on three different pages. Text box is still there, but the text is now gone. It was originally there as the first round or two of proofs had them. Second was a postcard where a line of copy at the end of a paragraph as well as the return between paragraphs is gone. There is also two lines of text at the end of the "story" that are just gone. The text is in the indesign file supplied by the customer but is missing in our copy of the file. There are no font errors.

Both files were previous versions and updated to CS6, but when I try to recreate the problem, it never happens again.

Prosetter 74 CtP - Imaging non-image areas...help!

I've been using a Heidelberg Prosetter 74 30mW laser with Violet photopolymer plates for over 2years. Suddenly over night, the CtP has started imaging non-image areas when we attempt to burn plates. I've verified that the processor is working correctly and have cleaned the optical head and rotating mirror on the CtP. It seems to me that the CtP doesn't recognise the non-image areas of the artwork and the whole page appears green after processing the plate whereas areas outside the artboard remain white!

Any ideas how I can resolve this issue?

Designing with questions about a color critical sheet-fed project

Hi, I'm a designer, I'd like to get your input on a few points so I can discuss them more intelligently with print companies who will be invited to bid on the job.

The project is color critical and will be done 4/0 on a sheetfed press. No spots.

1) I thought it would make sense to talk to G7 certified printers and have it printed in accordance with that spec. The very first printer I spoke to said "yes, that's us!". But just a few minutes later he asked me what color I wanted the paper to be. This rather surprised me - isn't the nature of the paper spelled out in the spec?

2) The second printer I talked to advised budgeting for a full wet proof and airfare and hotel for press checks during the actual run. Again, surprise. I guess I was under the impression that proofing technology had advanced to the stage where these things were unnecessary uses of time and money. In my mind, even if a project is color critical, once I've signed off on a proof, that is what the printer is going to produce, and the pressman doesn't me standing there looking over his shoulder at 3AM. Thoughts?

3) I'm getting contradictory advice regarding the best way to do my separations. I'm working in InDesign. On the one hand I've been told to use GRACoL2006v2 for color management and let InDesign determine the CMYK values. This produces colors that tend to be spread over all four inks. On the other hand, I've been told that those builds are less stable, and since almost all colors can be built multiple ways in CMYK, I should endeavor to do grey component replacement (GCR), e.g. make the same colors but build them with just one or two colors plus black - i.e. CMK, CYK or MYK, never all four of CMYK if possible. Again, any thoughts or opinions?

AB Dick PrintersRIP DPM34HSC problem

Hi all. Just to let you know, I was CathieH, but she no longer exists as I lost my job and am now at a little printshop. So those who knew me as CathieH, now you can send me messages to CathieHarris.

Anyhoo, I'm running poly plates through an AB Dick PrintersRIP DPM34HSC. I have a certain driver that I've been using with no problems. However, we had a power outage last Friday and everything went kablooey. My driver (named QMSMono) will no longer receive my files into the Active Queue. The computer can print through any other drivers to any other printers, but not this one. So I'm using one called RyobiMono, but the plates are 1/4" shorter making it difficult for the pressman.

Does anyone know a way that I can either get my old QMSMono to work or make the plates longer on the RyobiMono through PrintersRIP?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

The Church I go to has an Imagerunner 5000 that still works. They do not have a service contract and the last time it was serviced they said it needs developer and a new drum. Being that that would cost over $1000 to repair, we are considering replacing it. Is it worth fixing? Worked pretty good up till this.

Any advice would be great.

Polar EMC 92 memory saving problem - Please help

I got a problem with newly arrived polar EMC 92 (memory card detachable machine, with 99 programs and 999 cuts, white color buttons with lamps inside)

Its a weird problem and have never came across like it before. That is, "the cut sizes are not saving". the weird thing is, when I press the Record (The "Dot") button, its not saving the size and not giving any error message too. just like I've not press the button. I checked the button contacts and its ok. the memory card is recognized by the CPU. the leftmost display is showing [1 0]. I can change program number with P+ and P- but not the cut number with S+ and S-. there seems no any burnt ICs, it seems the software purposely not saving the sizes. (its somewhat like saving function is turned off) all other functions are working fine (clamp, blade, positioning, etc...)
what will be the problem? anybody came across with this kind of problem before?

and I'm also curious about the two switches on the N-KB card. could not figure out their functionality.

Please help me and I'm very helpless.

Thanks in advance

New magnetic Laser-compatible stock - Digital Magnecote

There is a new "Pre-Magnetized" laser-compatible stock available.. curious if anyone else has experiences with it?

Nekoosa Coated Products- Digital MagneCote (http://www.nekoosacoated.com/Products/Digital/Digital-MagneCote.aspx)

I can give my little experience running it... it is an interesting twist on printing media to say the least. It comes *Pre-Magnetized*, which makes it very interesting that even runs at all. The material we received was their 13pt 12x_18_. I had a small run to print on our brand new *Xerox J75*s. I determined the following necessary for operation:

Stock doesn't come with a GSM rating on the packaging, researching Nekoosa's website, 13pt is 688gsm! Well out of spec for most digital machines, out of spite I ran it anyways!

Must be fed out of a air-assist tray
required a custom paper designation:
-Coated
-300gsm
-Air assist set to "miss-feed table"
-Image Transfer set to MAXIMUM

Expect a miss-feed on the last sheet (due to it being magnetically held in the tray), pray your machine does not "stop" the other sheets mid printing.
Expect transfer issues on the first .33-.5" from the lead edge, in the case of a 11x17 full bleed you would need to shift the image to the limits of the page edge and cross your fingers.

Jam in your Fuser? Your Fuser is probably TOAST, the magnetic material melts off in quick order and adheres to the fuser roller(s)
-Keep spare fusers

Have short runs where it would not be cost effective to oursource? Worth Trying
Would I run this stuff all day long? NO
Would I ever tell my vendor that I run 600+ gsm? Or place a service call about feeding/IQ/Etc? NEVER

Stock quality:
Holds an image very well, besides the transfer issue on the lead edge
Magnet seems "weak", but would suffice to hold a sheet on a fridge or car body pannel

Cutting:
Cutting this on a Polar cutter is interesting
-Place a sheet of cover stock under the stack to keep them from magnetically adhering to the machine
-Cuts just like cover stock (no observable blade damage/chipping)
-Magnetic poles will cause shifting/de-jogging of your stock, so hold it in place with a block or pre-clamp it.

Help with resizing

Greetings!

My employer recently purchased the pitstop server/Switch combination. I love it so far, but am having trouble resizing jobs properly. What I need it to do is the following (pitstop action):

1. Remove crop marks (which I can use the action already in pitstop for.)
2. Cut off any bleed (if there is any) at the trim edge.
3. Resize the content so it will fit in a 8.5 x 11 page with .5 inch white border. This has to be variable because content is anywhere from 11x17 to 6x9. I would prefer if it didn't enlarge, just shrink proportional.

I have tried this several ways, but centering content doesn't work as many of the files have invisible words or bleed that extends too far to make centering work. I have used several of the tools, and I get close but not quite there. I am probably missing something obvious. Any ideas?

Thanks much!

ABDick 9995 E-2 Error

Hi! First time post. I'm getting an E-2 error on an ABDick 9995. The Electrical Service Manual says this is a poor encoder z phase input. The machine jogs fine and doesn't cause an error. When pressing the start button (at any speed) the machine will crawl - slower than the normal jog - for a few inches and then give the error. Pressing the stop button clears the error. Continually starting the machine at the slow jog and clearing the error will eventually get the machine running.

I've tried doing the timing procedure where you put the machine in service mode, put the timing wheel on 0 deg and loosen the encoder and adjust until the buzzer goes off. This doesn't make a difference.

I've taken the motor off and had it serviced (they just replaced the bearings). They said it looked fine.

The incoming voltage to the inverter is 208. The voltages coming off sp + and sp - match the book. There is a 0.08 volt drop when measuring from sp + & - to the inverter wires 2 and 5. Not sure if this is anything or not.

I'm not sure why it eventually starts working. Any ideas of what to check?

Thanks,
Mike Wallace

Epson Watercolor Radiant White vs. Velvet Fine Art

I'm wondering of anyone has an opinion on Watercolor Radiant White vs. Velvet or other standard fine art papers.

Watercolor seems to be Epson's bargain basement fine art paper, but my impression is that this has less to do with image quality than presentation. Velvet is twice as thick and feels fantastic when you handle it, but you would be hard pressed to the two stocks apart, once they are framed and matted. WRW has a better archival rating, and seems to have better shadow contrast. That's my initial sense, at least, in experimenting with these; if anyone has a more authoritative opinion, I'd be interested to hear it.

Need to Print in Silver Metallic or White on Envelopes

So, as the title says, I'm looking for a printer that will print addresses, postage, and USPS barcodes onto A9 (5.75"x8.75") envelopes in either silver or white color. The envelopes are made from a special metallic blue paper (So…Silk FSC | Gruppo Cordenons Inc. (http://gruppocordenons-usa.com/fine-paper/sosilk-fsc/)), thus dark ink won't contrast enough to meet the postal service requirements. We'd like to avoid using labels, as we want the envelopes to look as clean and professional as possible... Especially considering that we'd need 4 separate labels (to address, return address, intelligent barcode, and postage).

I was considering purchasing an Alps printer on eBay (MD-5000, or MD-5500), but I've heard that the ink is a wax based fragile material that would likely rub off or be damaged when the USPS handles it. I'm aware that there's other similar printers from Citizen, OKI, Kodak, Roland, Powis Parker, Kimoto, but I have no idea if these would work for us or not. I'm also aware of the few recent large format offerings from companies like Roland, but that seems a bit like killing a fly with a sledgehammer with respect to the cost.

I'm open to the idea of using inkjet technology, but I'm not sure which printers currently offer this.

Another concern is the thickness of these envelopes and that feeding may be an issue. The envelopes we've chosen are made from 0.010" thick paper, but when folded, there's sections that stack up to 4 times that thickness (0.040")... I've noticed that some of the Alps MD manuals say that .010" is the max... However, in my experience with other printers, I've been able to successfully run much thicker than the manufacturer recommends. It's also worth noting that the envelopes will be embossed prior to printing as shown in the attached image.

I wish I could say cost is not a factor, but we also don't have many thousands of $ to spend... However, if it comes down to it we could spend a couple thousand on a used printer to make this happen.

Here's my question: If you had to choose a printer for printing silver or white on envelopes, which one do you think is the best for our situation?

(Our situation: 0.010"x4 envelope material thickness, needs to print close to edge (for barcode, return address, and postage), ink needs to be durable, lower printer cost is better.)

Thanks in advance for the help!

Water form gear removal

The shinohara runs the following dampening system
Chrome roller in the fount water tray picks up the water
Metering roller is high up on the chrome roller and meters the amount of fount that makes it through the nip
Water form roller goes onto the chrome roller when water forms go onto the plate.

Chrome roller & metering roller are geared together
Water form roller has a separate gear & is geared to run at the same speed as the plate cylinder

This is a water roller system that some other manufacturers use also. I am wondering if anyone has taken the gear off the water form roller and allowed it to be driven by the chrome roller, effectively spinning at the same speed as the chrome & metering roller?
Do you think this will happen, or will the plate cylinder take over and make the water form spin at the same speed as the plate?

I am thinking of giving it a go on Monday, the reason for wanting the water form to spin at the same speed as the chrome roller is we get water beading/ building up between the chrome roller & the water form roller on start up. Once you hit damp on button with in 3 - 5 seconds water starts building up between this point. I'm thinking if the water form & chrome spin at the same speed the fount should pass through the nip more effectively
It doesn't matter what water form to chrome to plate strips are it still happens, nor does it matter what level of alcohol is run.

I know it is a roller hardness or compound issue, but it is the rollers we were recommended by the roller company and there is no chance of a swap now.
Standard starting shore A hardness of the metering roller is meant to be 30
Standard starting shore A hardness of the water form roller is meant be 23

The company has supplied
Westland IPA free compound metering roller 25 shore A hardness
Katsura standard compound water form roller 27 shore A hardness

I believe that both roller compounds need to be the same so that the water passes through the nip the same. As it stands you have one roller that allows the fount to pass through the nip effectively and one not so effectively, plus the fact that the water form roller is spinning at a significantly reduced rate then the chrome on start up leading to the fount building up between the nip.

I have read through the Komori picture framing thread and there is talk about removing the gear from the water form on that press but there are no comments about what will end up driving the water form, be it the plate cylinder or the water roller system through nip pressure.

Any thoughts on the outcome?

We are about to transition from Nexus 10.1 to Automation Engine. I guess transition from is incorrect as AE is an addition to, and not replacement.

I was wondering if anyone has completed this process and would offer hints, or comments on what to watch out for, pitfalls, differences.

Did you require the 7 days of training they recommend? Is there that much difference to the end users?

Recent experience with Vendor proposals...

So our school district recently went through a couple of months of sorting through vendor proposals and finally demoing certain models that fit our criteria... exact details (i.e. dollar amounts, etc) can't really be "detailed" as the proposals all had confidentiality agreements attached. This was the first time I was directly involved with the proceedings, from the making of our machine requirements through contract "requirements"... the responses we got from our local vendors were quite "eye opening".

Old machines:
Pair of Konica Minolta "Ikon" 650 (KM6500)
In 4+ years of service we put 5.2mil and 4.8mil on the machines
Fiery controllers
basic staple/stackers

"Criteria"
two machines, must meet/exceed the volume we put on the KMs
must be capable of duplexing 100#/300gsm
3 or 5 year lease, MUST guarantee working machines though out entire lease duration (this one makes me giggle... explained later)
a polithera of capabilities (finisher offerings, paper sizes/types, the typical...)
one machine with a high-capacity stacker

Vendor offerings came from from 6 different companies: Canon Business Solutions, Xerox, Konica-Minolta, Ricoh (formerly the IKON office), MiscVendor1, MiscVendor2 (I say "Miscellaneous" vendor because they are a VAR). I'm not really going to get specific about which vendor actually said/did what... but some may be able to guess  We had several offerings that were just insanely over-priced for their offerings, like they put in a bid just to put in a bid? Oddly, we had two offerings of machines identical in every way, one from a VAR and one from the actual manufacturer, the manufacturer was damn near double the cost of the VAR.

We had one manufacturer come back on the "requirement" that if we leased a machine for X years, that they must guarantee it to work the entire duration of the lease... their response: "*90 Days*"

Offerings included:
Canon C7000VPs
*I used to operate a VP, while not "bad" machines not desirable either, also out of price range
Canon ImageRunner C7065s (this got the "are you F'n kidding me"?)
*met none of the requirements we set forth
KM7000s
*barely met requirements
KM8000s
*met requirements and priced very well
Xerox 770s (later turned into J75s)
*met requirements and priced very well
Xerox 800s
*exceeded requirements/expectations, but sadly, excessively out of our price range
Ricoh C751s
*met requirements, way out of price range

The actual demoing:
We demo'd a Xerox 770 and a KM8000 using identical paper, files, layouts, finishing, etc...
*Xerox had the newest Fiery 10, the KM had Fiery 9
*Both machines came with inline booklet makers, the Xerox with a 10(?) sheet and the KM had 20(?) sheet capacity.. I forget the exact number of pages. We acutally have an offline collater/bookletmaker with a 20 sheet capacity, as well as a Squareback/Watkis with a 50 sheet capacity we can hand feed through.

Both were very impressive machines and we would have been happy with either machine, but the Xerox 770 totally blew the KM out of the water with just about every test we threw at it...

RGB Gray (not processed as true K)
RGB gray images on the Xerox were dead on the most accurate B&W (using CMYK blending) I have ever seen, the KM came out with the common muddy tinted/colorized B&W

Spot color Reflex Blue C: 100%, 50%, 25%, 10% screening
Xerox blew us away with it's color accuracy, it was Deep BLUE, even the screening was the correct shade of BLUE... the KM, like any other machine I have used/seen, printed everything Reflex as a shade of purple.

Running lightweight stock 20/50
Both machines did very well feeding 20/50, the KM exhibited the usual random multi-feeding/jamming associated with light weight paper (say 2-3 jams in 2000 sheets on the KM, none on the Xerox).

Running super heavy weight stocks
Both machines fed and printed well on 300gsm, full duplex, gloss and uncoated. Registration seemed a bit off on the KM.
I will note that the Xerox 770 did make more "noise" like the sheets were hitting on the inside of the paper guides (more on this)

Image "stretch/shrink"
printed a series of 1" squares on a 12x18 to check overall accuracy of the image dimensions... ever print a full bleed 11x17 and the crop marks come out 11x16.8?? Tis one reason I hated our KM650s
Xerox came out at an amazing 16" 63/64s, the KM was only around 16" 15/16. The KM was also "wide" across the page, at about 11" 1/16.

Construction
Yeah, the Xeroxs have a lot of plastic body panels, but they are all metal underneath. The tray construction on the Xeroxs could use more metal though

Paper feed and edge registration
Sadly neither machine used common edge registration or vacuum feed.
The Xerox has a very accurate system of registration, also has a utility to generate full-sheet patches and with the use of the scanner to auto-calibrate the IQ and registration.... KM used a menu system identical to the KM650, each tray has it's own values and if you load a paper in a tray it can override the registration values. The KM also used a weird multi-roller system to "twist" the paper into alignment (can we say over-engineered to have extra parts to wear out??).

Interface "Software" and Firmware operation
The interface on printers can be the most infuriating problems I have with most copiers/printers!
The KM650 had what I called the "please wait all day for the light to turn green to press start each and every time you load paper, ink, or clear a paper jam". Nothing like staring at a button for 5 minutes waiting for the machine to warm up...
Xerox: Automatically starts without any kind of user intervention
KM: "Please wait..."
Paper Catalogs
Both have paper catalogs... the Xerox is the most intuitive and easiest to setup/use. The KM will overwrite tray settings (i.e. tray alignment) each and every time you load a paper
Loading Paper
Xerox will let you load paper (assuming it is not printing out of that tray at the same time) at any time... even off. The Xerox has a "bug" affecting your ability to change tray settings like GSM, but we have a feature enhancement request in to Xerox to have this changed. The KM locks the trays if the machine is turned off... also, locks the paper settings while the machine is printing.

Paper Jams
This was done on purpose. The most common occurrence is you have a single 8.5x11 in the middle of your stack of 11x or 12x
The Xerox handled this better than any color machine I have worked with, ever. It sucked the 8.5x11 2" out of the tray, finished all the prints prior to that sheet, then reported a jam on that single sheet of paper. The KM pulled the sheet, printed on it with a 12x18 image, and wadded the sheet up in the duplexer... it was like an explosion of 12x18 paper inside the machine, every print before and sheet after was ruined.
J75 note: We were told by every vendor that a jam in the finisher would still require pulling every sheet out of the machine, they do not eject pages. Not totally true... if you experience a jam in the booklet maker or stacker exit, the machine will eject all the remaining printed sheets to the top-trays of your bookletmaker/high-capacity stacker. I personally love this.

Printing on "mixed" media, 80# Cov and 28# Text
Both machines have typical "slow downs" with printing mixed stock. The Xerox seemed a tiny bit slower, but the KM exhibited jamming about 33% of every paper switch.

Overall image quality
The Xerox was NOTABLY sharper, photos had significantly better detail and better skin tone accuracy.

Inline Booklet maker
here is where the KM totally shined. In total number of sheets, and how it operated... the KM actually pre-folded each sheet as it was printing to make a very sharp fold in the finished booklet. the KM also ejected the booklet out of the "front" of the machine, which was weird LOL The Xerox still made nice booklets though...

Fiery Controller
Xerox has a new Fiery 10, KM still uses 9.
Hands down, if you can get Fiery 10, GET IT
Fiery 10 now has an ability to process PDF transparency correctly. Also has the "Fiery Ticker", a car dashboard, showing the status of your printer/jobs that is easily viewed from 20-30 feet away... Also, the 10 RIP is way faster

Calibration

*Closing*
After everything we threw at the machines, hands down the Xerox beat the KM... When we started the contract negotiations with Xerox, they released the J75 and updated the proposal offering.
We have had our Xerox J75s for about 5 weeks and other than a bunch of bugs I have submitted to Xerox, we couldnt' be happier.

We had one manufacturer come back on the "requirement" that if we leased a machine for X years, that they must guarantee it to work the entire duration of the lease... their response: "90 Days"

Calibration
Xerox uses an inline desitometer, the KM still uses a ES1000/2000. The Xerox J75 still came with an ES2000 for color matching purposes.

Closing
After everything we threw at the machines, hands down the Xerox beat the KM... When we started the contract negotiations with Xerox, they released the J75 and updated the proposal offering.
We have had our Xerox J75s for about 5 weeks and other than a bunch of bugs I have submitted to Xerox, we couldnt' be happier.

Anyone using Onyx?

I saw the interface for the first time yesterday. It looks a lot like EFI.

How accurate is color? I need Onyx to handle the large RIP files for our new S70670, but should I consider moving the 7880 from EFI to Onyx?

Has anyone had experience running EFI and Onyx on the same print server?

Save as PDF javascript - issue defining enumerated values as a variable

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how I can use a variable as the target for a Save as PDF option in Illustrator javascript. the variables work fine where there is no enumerated value for the property i.e. opts.generateThumbnails but I can figure out how to get it working opts.compatibility or other properties with enumerated values using a variable as the definition.

The code snippet example below will always give an 'Enumerated Value expected' error when run for the opts.colorCompression option even though the string is correct.
If I define the opts as opts.colCompression = compressionQuality.AUTOMATICJPEGHIGH then everythings works

Does anyone know of how I can define the compressionQuality.AUTOMATICJPEGHIGH as a variable the will work

Tks

Code snippet

 opts = new PDFSaveOptions();
 opts.compatibility = PDFCompatibility.ACROBAT5;

Calcutate dot gain based upon readings with stochastic screen

Hello everybody,

I've been told that it's impossible to calculate dot gain, based upon readings from printed stochastic screens. Only AM-screens (round, elliptical, ...) should do the trick.

I find that very hard to believe since tint values (and thus dot gain) are calculated using both a blank paper measurement and a 100% measurement. If these two readings are known to the measuremet device, it should be quiet simple to calculate the relative positive of the measured tint since the measured spot (diameter about 4mm) is averaged.

Am I mistaking? And what can be the cause of inaccurate readings for stochastic screens?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I have recently noticed something weird about images resolution when checked in Pitstop,

I am working on a magazine on Indesign CS5 and all the images I am using are 300 ppi but when I open the finalized magazine in PDF and check the images resolution with "Pitstop Inspector", I see almost all the images with different (higher) ppi... for example one of the images was 300 and is now 700ish while another is 1200ish while another is still 300,

any help/hint is much appreciated,

Thank you in advance :)

Hi all!
I am a part of a startup team, and we're trying to develop an e-commerce/w2p solution that would be a bit different than the usual ones.
So, to make a long story short, we're working on all-in-one e-commerce solution. Our focus is not just standard w2p, but specialized e-commerce with advanced product & price configuration and complete printshop workflow (from product presentation through product design to advanced customer and order management, print proofing, discounts, payments and shipping).
So far we know that most of systems out there have some kind of online builder/designer tool , and we're planning to have one eventually, but we'd like to know if that should be a priority at the moment... In other words: What's the actual importance of a tool for online product customization for an average print services provider? What everyone here thinks, will its absence be a dealbreaker?
Thank you all in advance!

THIS SYSTEM IS NOT CERTIFIED BY IDEALLIANCE and will never be. Seriously $7000??

This Excel Document is FREE. You must of course own the Excel (2007/2010) application. I am not sure it works on MACs, other Excel versions or other Excel document emulators.

I have used this software 100's of times for RIP curve calculations, verification, and G7 certifications and it gets us through each time with no problems.

I have to say it is not a polished system, and you have to have your data in a certain format for it to work but if you follow the instructions it should get you very close to where you want to be without spending $2000 for a professional app. Saying that, Purchasing any of the G7 Certified Systems would always be better if you want guaranteed results, but if your on a budget, or work for a cheap company and your tired of Fangraphs...this will work.

The 1 MACRO only imports (copy paste) the data from another excel file (your saved P2P25 data) so if you want to manually do that disable them, it still calculates fine.

My company put me in charge of getting us re-certified G7 Master Printer and I had no clue what G7 entailed. they also didnt want to purchase the Curve2 software and wanted me to just use the Fangraph method for 10 presses, 5 substrates, and mulitple runs. So rather than sit for 4 weeks manually calculating fangraphs for 150 P2P25s, (ok dont roll your eyes, I said I didnt know what I was doing, was just following orders).
So I searched on internet for another solution. There didnt seem to be any application other than the $2000+ applications out there. So I started reading, searching, experimenting. I started in Filemaker Pro, but decided to move to Excel as it works for all the calculations.
I got my hands on the G7 How To 2008.pdf which unlike the G7 How To 2009, Has most of the formulas required to get the results. This problem came translating these formulas into something workable in Excel. As the Formulas deal mostly with LAB, it took another month of searching mathimatical conversion formulas to be able to convrt Densities into *L and back again, and working out the correct NPDC curve data.
First I worked on the brute force method of just inputing the values from the Fangraph and doing a look-up, lots of data entry but after useing this method for testing I stumbled across how to do all the math to dynamically (learning polynomial equations in the process) calculate the curve for any SID. This was a boon as it opened up alot of other factors that then became possible.
So by this stage I could target teh NPDC curve dead on with a simple Correcttred RIP curve but the Grayscale *a *b formulas still evaded me.
So embedded in all the calculations are 5 different calculations by radio button for calculating the Grayscale. I tested each extensively but none really worked correctly. Maybe I was blind or dumb but I could not figure how to have excel find the Gray target off the P2P25 and then calculate the desired grayscale RIP curves.
6 months went by, I gave up. Then one day I was reading some obscure manuscript from a professor to his students about something and it all clicked. (The paper had nothing to do with G7 and was dated in the 70's if I recall, why I was reading it I have no idea, it was one of those moments when i typed some weird thing in the search engine and it popped up). Anyways, I rewrote, which I hate to do, hence the still embedded 5 grayscale calculations, the grayscale calculations with this new understanding and the results were spot on.
Since I wasn't G7 anything by this stage, I still had to use a G7 Expert company to verify and submit all our G7 Master Printer data and I submitted our data for analysts and the results from their Curve2 software matched exactly my results, down to the graphs depictions.

Printing onto transparent - dpi issue?

Firtsly please excuse a newbie posting a thread straight away, but searching for some help with a current project.

I'm looking to replicate some coloured images printed on transparent paper, which are then used via an LED to project an image. The images themselves are only 13mm and although I seem to be getting a fair amount of clarity there appears to be what I can only pressume to be tiny pin hole gaps in the print, which is allowing light to pass through printed areas eg black/blue giving a speckled effect. I can only assume its a dpi problem (we've tried upto 1200dpi thus far). Samples of images that came with the projector lights do not suffer the same issue. Does this sound a dpi, media or print method (laser/inkjet) issue?

Help appreciated.

Everything was just the way we wanted it, but needed to rotate the folding pattern 180 degrees. Once we rotated the folding pattern, all of the manually input shingling was removed and had to be input again. Is this the norm or is there a flaw in the program? I've just never encountered it before. Was curious if anyone else has encountered this.

I always finish seal my art and photos with a water resistant coating after they cure, so do I really need to be using the expensive enhancer which uses up rapidly. The paper profile is adding it automatically, but I don't have the experience on what other paper to choose for profile (even though I print on the photo paper) I cannot use uncoated papers because the sealers milk them out horribly when sprayed. The photo paper hold up just great. Thanks for any help on this.... Jack

XMPie uDirect Conditional Formatting

I'm trying to achieve something with uDirect that I think should be possible but I'm not sure how it should be done.

I have a client that has a basic excel spreadsheet with about 30 names. Some of the people in the list of cell phones while others dont. Some of them have middle names while others don't. The problem is that when I go to set up my merge document in InDesign. Say for instance I set up a line with First Name, Middle Name, Last Name. When someone has all 3 of these it's fine. But when someone only wants to use First Name, Last Name what ends up happening is I get 2 spaces in between the First Name & Last Name because there has to be a space there to separate the First Name from the Middle Name even though there's not a Middle Name present. Does anyone know of a way to use the qLingo in XMPie to dynamically add or subtract this space depending on whether a Middle Name is present?

I've thought of just adding the spaces before the Middle Name, Last Name fields in the spreadsheet so that I don't actually have to use spaces in the InDesign file. This would work for this issue, but I have some other reasons I want to use conditional formatting and I cannot get it to work.

The other thing I'm trying to do with conditional formatting is when someone has 2 Titles or more for their job. The client wants to use 2 lines of space if the person has 2 titles. So 1 title on each line of type. I'm trying to vertically center the text within a box but what happens is that when I vertically center 2 lines of text but the person doesn't have a 2nd title, there just ends up being a blank line and it doesn't look centered. So I'm hoping that I can dynamically insert a return when that 2nd line is present as needed.

Anyway, hoping someone on here might know something about how this can be done as I cannot really find anything answering this anywhere else online.

Good morning! I wanted to see if anyone had ever encountered this issue before.

We have a customer who creates his flyers in the program Pages. He creates tables in Microsoft Excel, copies those tables as images, and then pastes those images into his Pages document. When we refined the PDF that he created out of pages, some of the dollar figures in the table _image_ changed. It wouldn't seem possible, but it's happening. We've looked at his Pages file and verified that the whole table is an image. The dollar figures that are changing are part of the table that is a calculation (in this case, 25% off list prices). Somehow the image is keeping some information that it shouldn't, and refining it is causing it to change.

Right,

I've been using digital printers for a few years and historically only used ICCs at the RIP stage, but am now looking at incorporating ICC into our entire workflow (photoshop, illustrator etc)

Just a couple of things I'm still wondering about;
- If I have a CMYK PDF saved from Illustrator that has an embedded profile of FOGRA39 but within this Illustrator PDF are 2 placed CMYK EPS images (1 with embedded US Web coated SWOP and the other with ISOcoatedsbv2)
- The RIP is set to use Embedded profiles.

Are ALL of the embedded profiles within the document used as they should be? or just the one embedded in the PDF?

I'm printing a fairly large booklet imposed. So the flat file is 38 double-sided 12x18 sheet. Every 15 or so the machine stops printing like it has a jam or is out of paper, none of which is the case, but it stops for 30 seconds and then starts printing again for another 15 or so sheets.

I've got no idea why it's doing this. Could it be a memory problem on the Fiery rip side or on the C8000 side?

Anyone have any clues?

Ricoh 901s Default paper sizes 13 x 19 option

I am looking to see if the 13 x 19 paper size is on anyones Ricoh 901 as a selectable paper size without using the custom paper size option. We just had this machine installed and the 13 x 19 size is not available as one of the default sizes even though it will run it. I put the size in as a custom size and tried to print and found that it had a smaller out-feed bracket and would not eject the 13 x 19 even after it printed it. The tech replaced the bracket with a larger size so we are now able to print 13 x 19 but that had me thinking maybe there was some software setting somewhere that has disabled the 13 x 19 option. We also have a Ricoh C751 which has the 13x19 as a selectable option available.

The machine we have was a demo model from one of ricoh's facilities and our service tech and specialists have found many crazy settings (from their testing I guess) in the machine that have caused a few quality issues. We still can get a good solid image on any type of lightly textured paper like vellum bristol for example. It is like it's not putting enough toner on the sheet and any solid of picture looks EXTREMELY muddled and blotchy.

Long story short, should the 901s have any option for selecting 13 x 19 as one of the default paper size options or is it always required to be set as a custom size?

CP85 cleaning unit makes weird noise.

Hi all!

For the last two years we've been using the CP85 cleaning unit.
It proseced approximately 10000 azura TS plates (or 5000 sq mtrs),most of them (till february)745x605 and lately mainly1030x785.

The last month it started made some noises coming mainly from the scrub rollers gears, something like an old watch unwinding (-krrr-krrr-) can't really describe it i must record it i suppose :-P

Today the noise became much louder.

The only thing i've noticed is the gears are kinda loose, but i wouldn't know how loose they were in the first place, and they sure aren't much more loose than the transfer rollers gears.

Plates are coming up fine, and the maintenance is performed in very tight basis-major cleaning every month- no chemicals used.

Any one facing something similar?

Thanks in advance!

Conflicting Lab Color Values

We are screen printers, and I am trying to set some print standards for our printers. ISO 12647-5

Fogra9 is for screen print, but i can't seem to find a profile to install (SC_GC2_CO_F30), only find the data.
However, Fogra information sheet says Fogra9 is practically identical to offset on gloss art paper (Fogra39?),
so should i forget about Fogra9 and use fogra39?

For Fogra9, why are the Lab values different (Fogra Vs. ISO) when they are both for 12647-5, gamut class 2, especially in Cyan and Yellow? Both are black backing for measurements.

Fogra9s.txt (Screen printing acc. ISO 12642-5, SC_GC2_CO_F30, gamut class 2)
Lab Values
100 Cyan 57.36 -37.40 -49.83
100 Magenta	47.68	73.16	-6.13
100 Yellow 88.28	-4.97 94.76
100 Black 19.14	-0.14 1.44

ISO 12647-5 (gamut class 2)
Lab Values
100 Cyan 52 -33 -51
100 Magenta	47 74 -5
100 Yellow 89 -9 83
100 Black 18 0 0

Once i know which Lab values to aim for, then i'll continue on with a test print on the press to do some measurements of solids and halftones etc..
(At the moment we print by eye, but we will get a densitometer soon to measure halftones properly so we can create better (correct) films and prints etc. with a standard to aim for)

Thanks for your help!
