Epson Watercolor Radiant White vs. Velvet Fine Art

I'm wondering of anyone has an opinion on Watercolor Radiant White vs. Velvet or other standard fine art papers.

Watercolor seems to be Epson's bargain basement fine art paper, but my impression is that this has less to do with image quality than presentation. Velvet is twice as thick and feels fantastic when you handle it, but you would be hard pressed to the two stocks apart, once they are framed and matted. WRW has a better archival rating, and seems to have better shadow contrast. That's my initial sense, at least, in experimenting with these; if anyone has a more authoritative opinion, I'd be interested to hear it.

Looking at a true flatbed and like the table height and pin system and being able to use jigs with many smaller pieces, but it would be nice to be able to run rolls, who has strong opinions for one system over the other?

Question about gloss enhancers

My new HP 3300 uses gloss enhancers for the photo papers that I use to print on. I always finish seal my art and photos with a water resistant coating after they cure, so do I really need to be using the expensive enhancer which uses up rapidly. The paper profile is adding it automatically, but I don't have the experience on what other paper to choose for profile (even though I print on the photo paper) I cannot use uncoated papers because the sealers milk them out horribly when sprayed. The photo paper hold up just great. Thanks for any help on this.... Jack

How do I connect a mac directly to fiery?

Our fiery print server for our canon IR 9075 has been having problems since we hit 1,000,000 imprints. mainly, we're down to a communication error. the light at the ethernet from fiery to printer is red. Tech support solution was to remove the fiery as a workstation. now that we do not have a direct printing connection to the printer and data has to go through hundreds of feet of cat5 cable, we no longer have capabilities to print larger files such as catalogs. get offending errors and it just wont handle the files needed. it will print single page black white files up to about 300 prints, then gets the communication error again and i have to clear cods in the printer to get it back working.
I had an idea to connect my Macpro directly to the fiery, and possibly be able to print a larger catalog file.
I tried several different methods without success. one most close to working was to install a new printer through advanced settings using the Canon CUPS PS then authenticating with the IP address. got the happy beep, but could not connect to the fiery workcenter.
I'm not an IT person, but neither is anyone else involved with the service of the machines. Have months of backlog printing and am getting desperate to get this thing working.

Mac pro 10.5, using the fiery GMX300 drivers Canon iR-ADV C9000s US with graphic arts package, or an old PC. printer is IR adv-9075.

Struggling with color. Help?

We are currently using a HP Z6100PS to print onto gloss adhesive material to create packaging mockups. We are struggling with getting good color from the machine, especially with PMS colors. I realize that a printer will never get 100% Pantone accuracy, but I have to believe it can get closer than it's getting now.

I have tried every profile and every setting I can find and nothing gets anywhere close on color. I can convert the PMS colors to CMYK and tweak the percentages and eventually get close to the color we want, but it's never very accurate, and that process is incredibly time consuming.

We are primarily an Illustrator workflow (Mac OS), so we print directly from Illustrator. We could print from other software if necessary, but would ideally print from Illustrator.

So, I guess I'm asking what I should do next to get close on color. We have talked about adding a third party RIP and tried a demo version of the RTI/Harlequin RIP but it wasn't any better. Calibration is done on the machine every day, and temperature and humidity are within tolerances.

Alternatively, is there another wide format machine that would get us closer with color? Purchasing another machine is not out of the question. We would need something at least 40" wide.

Epson 9900 print problem

I have been trying with no end in site to get this image to print. The printer is an Epson 9900. The art is simply an outline of letters, the line is 7pt and 100% black. The sheet size is 44x31.5 off of a roll of epson premium luster 260, But I just can't get it to print correctly, check out the attached photos.

I have tried printing a photograph and it is jacked up too, I have posted the print and what it is supposed to look like.

So I thought I would align the damn thing, so I did that and it still prints out all jacked up. This damn thing ruined my weekend! AH!

I'm printing from OSX 10.8.3, Indesign CS5.5, the art is a font that has been converted to outlines.

My thought is that it's not the art though, I think it really is the printer, which by the way doesn't get used much.

Any ideas?

Beginner Problems

How do train your photo prints to flatten after they come off of the printer? Mine just want to continually curl up. They are also curling in the printer to the point that the printer head bar scratches them after inking...actually, I think it is the dryer bar. In this case I think it is old paper stock or paper that has been in a fire or hot place. Even though it is one of HP best photo papers, it is not very white, the box had been opened and it doesn't want to flatten out at all. I purchased the roll from an ebay seller.

My clearcoat finish pin holed over the heavy inked area of my aqueous based print. This is surely outgassing that will let up soon. Is there a way to force the cure times, or is there a known window of time needed to wait? The outgassing occured at about 12 hours post printing on the darker areas about 5 minutes after it was sprayed.

Thanks for any solutions on these, Jack

I wasn't quite sure which forum to post this in...

Does anyone have any experience with small CD/DVD Replicators that also inkjet on the face of the media?

A few of our customers have the need for disc replication that will accompany their printed collateral.

For some of the smaller quantities I'm thinking about bringing it in-house.

I'm looking at the EPSON Discproducer Standard 100 Disc Publisher (PP-100) (http://discproducer.epson.com/Disc_Producer/ProductInformation/ProdModels/StandardModel.htm)

Any thought or experience would be greatly appreciated.
