stair step gradients in Torrent rip

Hey guys, I'm getting stair steps gradients from a file when outputing negatives. We have a Torrent Rip, copyright 2005, Harlequin Genesis release (7.1r0) and an Agfa Avantra 20 image setter. What can I do to make a smoother gradient?

Are the gradients Vector or Raster?
If they are Vector, ensure that the Maximum Gray levels are set to 4096 in the Sep & Screening Manager for the Page Set-up being used, as well as ensure a PS3 or PDF file and driver is used.

If they are Raster, you might not be able to improve results based on their values.
