Newb Preps Text-Mark Question

OK, new to Preps, and I haven't figured out this little ditty yet...

I use Smart Mark --> Text Mark to put my job slug info into the gripper. Choose Roman text, whatever point size fits... Sometimes I'll run it up the side of the sheet vertically if there is a lot of room...

Whenever I place the mark horizontally, regardless of font size, it spreads the mark out the entire length of the plate, making the type rather illegible.

If I don't use a Smart Mark, and just place a standard text mark, it all goes just ducky. Any idea's from the Prep's Pro's out there?
