Printer/Plotter cutter compatability

We have just installed a Cannon wideformat Inkjet and loving it, but now I am wondering, can we print on our wide format machine and then send the same printed sheet through a cutter plotter accurately? Do we need the same brand/software or will the plotter simply work out where the registration marks are printed by our Cannon and then cut the sheet out as accurately as it would have if the two machines had both been the same brand?

Only if you have a plotter that has a eye that reads the registration marks.
