Default Epson workflow for Newsprint simulation

    Hi guys,

Hope someone can help. We have an epson 4800 and have had a request to run some proofs to match newsprint. At the moment we use standard gloss and matt paper, but we have managed to get some newsprint, though I think it is very light on weight.

Im a little unsure if we can use this paper for fear of jamming.

On basic terms, if we had more requests for this workflow what stocks should we use and what curves and profiles also. Any tips or links to help setup this workflow would really help..

    cheers

You should be able to set up your color profiles on your proofer to simulate newsprint without actually having to run the newsprint through it. Basically, you'd set up a profile that would add yellow/magenta to simulate the color of the newsprint stock that the job will actually print on. We've done this in the past with a gardening catalog and newspaper inserts we've printed. This way, you could still use your regular paper in your printer. Although you wouldn't be able to simulate the "feel" of the paper, you could at least be in the ballpark when adjusting colors.
By the time I walk out of here, I'm going to be a lean, mean, prepress machine...

    Of course!!!
We have configured the epson with a proofer software in more than 50 locations, the only thing is, you will have to create a profile with the kind of newsprint you have got. In this process the proofing software will calculate and retain the TAC values and other LAB values. This process might take you 1 or two days and it also depends on which proofer you use.

As a piece of suggestion, use the best quality of news print u can get. Epson performs really very well as a proofer and excels when it comes to news paper proofing..

    Hi Lister,

We have several customers who print on Epson 7900s on a paper we have manufactured for this very purpose.

It is called Compose SNAP Proofing Paper
    Order part number - 500053-009

    24 x 250 foot rolls, it has a 2 inch core.

    Aprox L*a*b* values: L*= 90, a*=-1.0, b*=9

It takes some adjusting of the vacuum setting as this is somewhat lightweight stock, but we know what settings work !

We drive this using Star Proof for folks who want to see the actually dots that they will see on the print work (Star Proof enables you to print using the 1 bit TIFF files you use to plate with)

Perhaps you can send me a page and I can print a sample for you ?
