    Default RGB to CMYK

    Hi,

We are packaging printers and we work on AI / CDR files in our prepress. Occationally, we get files in RGB mode and converting it to CYMK, I hear is not advisible since some inadvertent changes can happen.

    Request guidence on this.

The RGB AI & CDR files will need to be converted to CMYK and or spot colours at some time in the production process and if you are not going to do this then you will be reliant on the upstream conversion, which is usually not a good thing to blindly rely on in many cases. After converting from RGB to CMYK mode (check your Colour Settings for appropriate ICC profiles) - it would probably be good to select say a black object, then use the select same fill/stroke colour and repaint all objects that should be K only to be 0cmy100k. I would then hide these selected elements and repeat with all other fills/strokes, double checking the colour builds for critical colours.

It would be nice if Illustrator would "preserve black" from RGB to CMYK like Acrobat Pro does, making a clean 100% only black conversion from 0r0g0b values.
