Epson 9880 head travel

I have a 9880 that runs the head all the way across the width of the paper even when it is only printing a small image. It is happening with 2 different RIPs, so I am thinking it is a printer setting, but I have not found the solution. Any ideas?

Check the RIP settings. Most RIPs have an option to force the head to travel the full width, if you switch this off. the head should only travel the width of the print job

Yeah, I left the 44" roll in the printer, but told the RIP it had 24", and it only travelled the width of the print job, same at 36". At 42" or 44", it travels the whole way, with no other changes in the RIP.
