If they give you drums to put your old ink in you'll want to make sure they're completely full because you pay by the drum.
One of our local customers sends their waste ink off to a company that re-processes it into black ink and returns it to them. The cost is lower than buying new black ink even after shipping costs, plus you have the environmental benefits of recycling it instead of disposing of it.
I'll ask them for some details if they don't mind sharing, and post back soon.
UPDATE: the customer I spoke about is actually still in the testing/evaluation stage of recycling and reusing their inks. However, in the meantime I've found this, which although outdated might still be useful: http://www.pneac.org/sheets/pdfs/InkRecycleS2_V2.pdf
