The reason the client supplied the files as PSB was most likely that they too were having problems with pixel limits (30,000px) or 2gig file size limit. I think that in later versions of Photoshop these limits were perhaps doubled, however your issue is the RIP. Is the file a 16 or 32bpc image, can it be reduced to 8bpc to reduce file size if the image is below the pixel limit?

Have you tried PDF? Either as an input file format or printing direct to the RIP from Acrobat? Can you print to .ps and pass that file through the RIP manually?

What are the X/Y pixel dimensions of the file? Can you get away with resampling the image down to a lower resolution with a minor sharpen to account for the softness introduced in the resample down?

I would be curious to know if the files are indeed over 2gb in file size when opened in Photoshop and or if they exceed 30,000 pixels on an edge (what is the horizontal and vertical pixel count in the image/image size menu)? Are the original files RGB or CMYK and are they greater than 8 bits per channel? Are there any unnecessary alpha channels in the file or smart object layers? I know, more questions than answers! Once the forum knows what is going on better advice can be given, until then it is all guesswork.

What file formats and colour modes are supported by your wide format RIP (does it support ICC profiles in input files)?
