    Prepress Takt Time

I'm not familiar with the lean tools, but my two cents. The trick is to know where to start, since marginal improvements are possible almost everywhere. I would start with a face to face with the best salesperson and the best CSR in the outfit. Then spend an hour or so focusing on what is...

Need 2nd opinion and a slight rant

Not sure if this relevent but I didn't mean to say in any way that YOU were lazy. Only that your supervisors are both dumb and irresponsible. :) Damn, it's hard to be ironic in email. But it's so hard to resist in the face of such silliness that they are making you go through.

    Prepress Takt Time

I just put a post on my blog this morning about Lean. There are some links there, but the content is something that is often overlooked. Here's the link Print in the Communication Ecology

Need 2nd opinion and a slight rant

Oops... What tangled webs they weave, when they are too scared to take responsibility. If the job is good enough to get paid, it should be good enough to deal with rationally. But, then you didn't choose this in the first place, so.... Can you try to say something like, " How about I come in...

    The Value of Desperation

@PDeuth, Good points. In terms of commercial shops especially the idea that it's a pull situation where the process in a sense is the product helps to clarify what's going on. On other way to look at the same thing is that commercial print shops are experts at just-in-time manufacturing. While...

    how's business

Interesting thread. Maybe what we are seeing that big corporations are the dying dinosaurs and small business are the smart mammals? It makes lots of sense that many small customers is a lot safer than a couple of large ones. The problem of course is moving from one culture to another. But...

    The Value of Desperation

Matt, I have to respectfully disagree with :"I don't, however, believe its the best to have production people within the loop. Sales is a good shift, but maybe only having the shop foreman in on the discussion is the best bet. The foreman controls what happens in production, and his input is...

    The Value of Desperation

David, All good points. Just want to suggest that we don't lose sight of the possibility of repurposing workers who might not be as necessary in a lean implementation. Every business needs more work. To get more work Printers need innovative products. The best way to innovate is to combine...

    how's business

Think about sales or own your own or with some friends Think about sales or own your own or with some friends No info on the topic question, as I'm no longer in the game. But, if you have the bad luck of getting the layoff notice or are rightly worried about it. Think about bringing in work...

5Why exercise, not sure if I went far enough

Given that we both agree that it is very easy to tell someone else what THEY should do, here's my take. I think alot of this workflow problem is actually a business problem. Is the concern about waste driven by the amount of money the company loses or is just that it so obviously stupid and...

    An experiment in Lean?

Erik- Could you specify the skill sets that an onsite engineer would need? If I know what we're looking for , you never know....:)

5Why exercise, not sure if I went far enough

I think you might want to consider using a what...as in What are the issues with x,y.z. When you solve those, you might be on the right track. "Issues" is usually the way to stop "whys" After the what, you get to go back to why.

    An experiment in Lean?

Yes. From my point of view the driver is what Erik is trying to do. If he's correct, RI College gets lots of publicity and increases it's brand as a potential center of innovation in Print. There is a pretty good chance that someone at RI College sees the value of increasing the perception of...

Hi Mattf- I checked on Smith Print. Do you think that someone there might be interested in talking about this? My focus is on engineering sustainable sales processes. I have a pitch about why getting involved with Design Schools shows a clear pathway to increased sales. FYI - Although based in...

    An experiment in Lean?

Thanks for the info. From my 7 years of experience teaching at a prestigious NYC design college, my bet is that you have hit the nail on the head when you say that no one knows how to replace the person who has been running the program. My bet that the "no money for equipment" is probably...
