Rhin-O-Tuff to Debut Innovative Auto-Collating Punch at drupa

    By Sean O'Leary

Although new inkjet systems are claiming a lot of the pre-drupa fanfare, there appear to be some startling developments in the post press world worth paying attention to...

For example, U.S. binding equipment manufacturer Rhin-O-Tuff has just told PrintPlanet they will unveil a potentially game-changing off-line automated collation and punching platform at the show. Incorporating BDT Print Media GmbH’s advanced media handling technology, the Tornado Autopunch...

  • HighCon will demonstrate pumped up digital converting systems at drupa ‘16

    by Sean O'Leary

No one can accuse the visionaries at Highcon of thinking small. Since the company’s 2009 establishment in Yavne, Israel, the founders’ objective has been to digitally transform the post printing end of the production line, and in the process create demand for a new industry paradigm that doesn’t even have a proper name yet. Or, as the mission statement suggests: “To bridge the gap between design creativity and production capability with innovative digital technology...

Thinking Inside the Box: Maximizing Finishing Productivity

    By Richard Romano, Industry Analyst

It’s no secret that each year sees more and more offset work migrating to digital, a technology transfer driven largely by a decline in run lengths. While today’s digital presses can productively handle these short runs (however you want to define “short run”), the bottleneck has historically been in the finishing stage. For much of the past 15 years, the lack of finishing equipment that was compatible with digital presses was a common lament....

Digital vs. Traditional Print Packaging A Growth Market. Good News!

drupa Expert Article 8. Edited for PrintPlanet
    Author: Michael Seidl

    Summary
Digital printing has succeeded in establishing value in the traditional areas of the print media industry, but adoption has been slower in packaging. The exception is label printing. The requirements of the packaging industry are completely different from those in traditional printing, and the players have taken more time to adopt a digital future. But, increasing numbers of producers and customers...

A Hurdle to High Speed Inkjet Supremacy Writ Small

The ascendancy of production inkjet may be written in disappearing ink…or not.

    by Sean O'Leary
There is a speed bump dogging the supremacy of inkjet technology like trouble dogs River City. We’re talking about de-inking. That is to say, “pulp laundering”, the key component of the recycling process in which ink residue is washed and filtered out of incoming paper stock. The problem is that aqueous inkjet formulations are difficult to completely remove from paper pulp and...

Back To The Future at SGIA 2015

The “Screen Printing” Show as a Mirror of 21st Century Enterprise

Back when I was a trade journalist focusing on the graphic arts, I specialized in disruptive technologies such as wide-format inkjet and electronic displays. This niche was rewarding because it allowed me to make predictions that most people would probably forget I had made, including me. At one point I even considered becoming a futurist, but I procrastinated and the opportunity flew by....

GTI’s Illuminating thoughts on ISO 3664.:2009 and color viewing environments

    Sean O’Leary

As printing technology gallops like a runaway stagecoach along the digital trajectory, one critical production facet persists as decidedly analog and human: the dream of universal color viewing environments. Especially for higher value creative projects, the standardization of color evaluation supply chains is essential across the creative/production continuum. Designers, brand...

  • Why Inkjet?
    noelward
    By Noel Ward

When the first high speed inkjet machines, all roll-to-roll devices, began reaching the market there was a lot of skepticism. Even some of the journalists and analysts with whom I swap perspectives weren’t sure inkjet was going to be a real player. Some thought (or maybe hoped) electrophotographic (EP) systems would go on forever. EP was, after all, their comfort zone. Many remained skeptical about inkjet.

Why would anyone want cutsheet inkjet?
    A couple...

It is not every day that one has the privilege of attending an event that kicks off with a discussion of how the Fourth Wave of the Industrial Revolution traces back to the 1916 self-service grocery innovations of PigglyWiggly. Nevertheless, that was how CHILI CEO Kevin Goeminne opened his talk at the Spicy Talk ‘18 Chicago Workplace on February 15. CHILI, of course, is the creator of a surging browser-based document editing platform that allows...

What do you do when things go sideways? What does your team do? Who decides? And how do people feel when it’s all over? Successful? Or maybe like everyone just dodged a bullet?

When things don’t go according to plan, there are usually a few people in any organization who fall apart, operating under a policy that goes something like, “when wracked by fear, or deep in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout.” Meanwhile, cooler heads usually...

Ask yourself a question: How dependent is your business on the support available for the equipment and technology on your shop floor? If your company is like most others in our industry the answer is probably something like, “More than I’d like it to be.”

To minimize the stress and moments of panic that come with an unexpected equipment failure, you probably have a series of procedures in place to help ensure you can still meet deadlines...

Episode 3: Ink and Substrates Matter

    by Noel Ward, Editor@Large

So you know inkjet is the game changer and has a lot of room to grow and change, and that an inkjet press running coated or glossy paper offers more paths to profitability. Priming fluids may have helped, but are not necessarily essential. So it sill comes down to putting the ink on the page, which is why Ink and Substrates Matter.
