Sappi North America has announced a $5.94 million investment in its Cloquet, Minnesota mill, with the October replacement of the headbox unit on Paper Machine 12.
This investment follows a $170 million investment in 2011 enabling kraft pulp production of chemical cellulose used in textile & consumer goods. The latest investment enabled Sappi to maintain its capacity by adding a state-of-the-art, dilution profiled headbox—an integral part of a paper machine responsible for spreading pulp fibers evenly to form a high-quality sheet.
Sappi CEO, Mark Gardner, said the investment “Ensures Sappi’s highest quality standards and supports our growing paper-based packaging business.” He notes that the mill has stayed competitive & profitable in a challenging market, through product diversification, renewable energy and waste reduction initiatives.
