According to a Smithers Pira study–The Future of Printing for Food Packaging to 2021–food packaging & food-safe inks will grow at a faster rate than the overall packaging market, in large part due to changing trends in food consumption.
As household occupancy rates fall and new habits occur, fewer families are sitting down together for meals, and snacking is becoming a major trend, accounting for 50% of all food and beverage consumption in the US. For packaging, this means a reduction in the pack size, with more designs to facilitate consumption “on-the-move”. The pack will increasingly act as the serving method, meaning that food packaging will have to be designed & produced with reduced contamination risk as a design consideration.
