United Caps, an international manufacturer of caps and closures—exhibiting at Propak Asia (June 2018)—featured breakthrough “green” closure solutions made from bioplastics. In collaboration with Braskem, a leading Brazilian petrochemical company, United Caps’ line of green, bio-sourced plastic caps & closures are made from sugar cane.

The green polyethylene begins its life as sugar cane and is designed to have the same characteristics, quality and properties as conventional PE, sharing the same production route. Combined with the fact that sugar cane consumes a significant amount of carbon dioxide, green polyethylene has a negative carbon footprint. Its use reduces greenhouse gases and it is 100% recyclable.

Err, making plastic from sugar cane was introduced over a decade ago, e.g. Coca-Cola's "Plantbottle" (https://www.coca-colacompany.com/st...ging-an-introduction-to-plantbottle-packaging). That being said, not all bio-based products are biodegradable - although this one may be. The United Caps's impossible to navigate web site doesn't go into any details on their plastic. And the claim that sugar cane consumes a significant amount of carbon dioxide as the benefit sounds a lot like green washing.

Well, someone from United Cap thought it was good enough to issue a press release about it.
