  • Xeikon simplifies flexible pouch printing

Brand owners looking for retail impact with flexible pouches—the ability to stand, lightweight & environmentally sustainable—will find Xeikon’s latest innovation targeted directly to this challenge: Consumer goods, Food, Beverage, Chemical, and Pharmaceutical applications. Many brands are transitioning from rigid packaging to more flexible versions. Pouches can have a variety of different shapes depending on size, end-use, application and functionality.

Pouch printing responds to current marketing & on-demand manufacturing trends, i.e. significant numbers of SKU’s, shorter lead times and the rising retail popularity of pouches. Or, as Xeikon’s Filip Weymans calls it, “A prime example of customer-driven innovation”.

Pouches are sustainable—a pouch has a "product-to-package" ratio of 35:1—meaning it can carry up to 35 times its own weight, resulting in less energy consumption to produce & transport. Pouches are somewhat complex to manufacture, because they are flexible and have multiple-layers—essentially, a laminated bag made from several layers of material requiring a number of different production steps.

The first production step is to digitally print the text & graphics on a thermal laminate outside layer. A variety of different layers are then constructed by lamination with a series of barriers for protection before the pouch is finally put together in the manufacturing process. Xeikon’s solution offers low complexity with a broad range of lamination possibilities. Additional benefits include Xeikon dry toner’s guarantee for food safety, with the ability to print variable data in both single & full color.
