Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

When a PDF is exported from Quark 7 then run through our Prinergy workflow, the crop marks aren't held in the correct places. It appears that the 'media' box size shifts for some reason. The PPD that's being used to generate the pdf from Quark is 'creo refiner' which works in conjunction with Prinergy. I've heard it may be a Quark problem, acrobat problem, or even Prinergy.

With the workload of 500+ publication & the amount of pdfs that can be generated by a customer for their book. We cannot spend the money & man hours to 'adjust' every pdf on the prinergy end so the crop marks are in the right area & the pdfs will print correctly on the press.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Are there any solutions?

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

Does it only happen when you export a PDF directly from Quark. In other words, what happens if you print a postscript file, then run the .ps file through Prinergy (Refine to PDF)?

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

It happens when Postscripting to Distiller as well. Since Quark 7 now has 'MediaBox'; 'TrimBox'; 'BleedBox'; 'CropBox' built within - we think that has something to do it, but still don't know for sure.

For some reason the 'MediaBox' setup is shifting when running thru Prinergy. Even when using a specific output style in Quark 7.

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

I'm sure you've checked this, but is it at all possible that in your Registration Marks Options section you DON'T have it set at centered?? Or that the offset value was changed??

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

Prinergy is only seeing the 'MediaBox', not 'TrimBox'. Which causes all of the Crop marks to shift out-of-whack.

So, it does appear to be a Prinergy issue with Quark 7.

Yeah, but if it also happens when you make a .ps file and run it through Distiller, then it must be a Quark thing, right?

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

What can you do without? Would it be better not to use crop marks? Can

I'm not a Prinergy user, but I do a lot of troubleshooting. We use cropmarks and sometimes we don't. Do you have register marks from your RIP?

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

Crop marks are necessary for our printing process (CTP). We are full printer - bindery & all. So, the Crop have to come from Quark set to Trim Box.

Prinergy is used to preflight pdfs & place in a signature layout for press. So, if the crop marks aren't there or shift in any way, we can't got to press.

Re: Quark 7 Export to PDF - Crop Marks shift in Prinergy

Thanks for everyone's answers. Turns out it's a combination of the Quark 7 new features (MediaBox; TrimBox; CropBox; BleedBox) that required a specific action to be created in PitStop to keep the page size at 'TrimBox'.

The person who is responsible for writing these types of actions will have to investigate further.
