Shhhhhh! You aren't supposed to mention that there's a whole class in our society who are partially or entirely dependent on government hand outs. Just keep writing the check.

In some more Socialist countries (e.g. the UK if the media is to be believed) being unemployed (especially if you've got children) can be very lucrative.

Anjem Choudary, for example, who hates everything about western society except the benefits, as a father-of-four takes home more than £25,000 ($36100.00 USD) a year in benefits (which include free healthcare) and lives in a £320,000 ($462000 USD) house in Leytonstone, East London.

Europe is committing suicide by Cameron and Merkel, I cannot for the life of me understand how its citizens sit idle by and allow this to go on, on the positive side I know a printer in Belgium via this forum who landed a contract to print the holy books (Quran) so every cloud silver lining and all that

Well, in the USA we're working to catch up quickly. And unemployment is one of the biggest scams ever. To be sure it helps some people. But there are lots of people who game the system. Work 90 or 120 days - as long as you have to work to become eligible again - and then get yourself fired so you can collect more unemployment. If you ever see resumes with short stints like that (or in some cases 15 months) you can bet that person will be leaving and many cost you money. And of course there is almost no such thing as an employer winning an unemployment case.

Document everything employees do against company policy such as extended breaks, showing up late, personal cell phone use. We have won some unemployment cases. Just present the files. Hard to refute well documented infractions/violations.

Unemployment should be a way to help people find new employment. In my great state the department of corrections has a very lucrative business of using inmates to produce sellable goods and services. I'm sure they justify giving the inmates $.62 per hour by saying that they are teaching them a trade so they can enter the workforce on release.

Why can't we do the same for the unemployed. Except pay them a real wage, not $.62/hr, in lieu of handing out a free benefit.

This is the long list of industries that our state (and the other 28 partner states) dabbles in: https://www.pride-enterprises.org/ca....aspx?zcid=112

Oooooops! Sounded good until I saw this program:

How'd you like to compete against a company that offered its employees full health and dental benefits, free room and board, free chef designed meals, free education, and where the employees are thrilled at earning less than a dollar an hour? Also, these employees are almost guaranteed not to leave their employer at the drop of a hat to go to another company.

Hmmm?

ROTFL

You should see the quotes we have to go up against with them. Our $10k is their $3k - makes you wonder how the state expects to keep tax revenue going to pay for the prison complex.

Concerning those that take advantage of the system to make money, I tell myself this so I don't get angry: The kind of personality and character it takes to not want to work to earn a living is the kind of person I don't want in my shop and wouldn't wish them on another employer.

Hopefully you can ID this type before the hiring commences. Those who practice the work, skip, lather rinse and repeat skullduggery usually are quite convincing and become acrobats in masking their past. Some cucumbers are TOO COOL out there on this planet. ;).
