        • Hi there.
My name is Guy and I work as the Graphics Department Manager for a custom trade show display builder in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Canada. I have worked in the sign and graphic trade for about 26 years now. Started out with an old pantograph type engraver and went to Gerber vinyl plotter (IVb and Sprint to HS15 to Summa wide format plotter) to Gerber Edge printer to Mimaki JV3 solvent printer, digital design and prepress with look ins to silk screening and numerous other graphic methods along the way.
You can never know enough (or have enough money), so these forums make a lot of sense, if you know enough how to pick through the chaff (no offense intended to anyone).

          • Introducing myself

            Good day all:
I'm a 27 year veteran of this industry - having worn many hats, from AB Dick salesman, to newspaper advertising rep, shop foreman at a large advertising/printing company and most recently smaller commercial printshop. It is this latter position since 1994 that I probably will end my career in this industry.
The frustration of dealing with demanding clients and equipment breakdowns is taking a toll on my life and retirement can't come soon enough. Our shop was one of the first in our area with small press 4 colour capability and the first with computer to (polyester) plate equipment. What seemed like a great idea back in 2006 to purchase a 4 colour Ryobi 3304 press, now looks like not so smart of an idea because I can farm out to trade shops at a much better margin than printing in house.

Anyways, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I appreciate any assistance the group can send my way from time to time on issues beyond my knowledge

Hi my name is Steve Charlesworth

I was made redundant from Heidelberg 2 years ago, I was a Pre press and consumables specialist/salesman. Before Heidelberg I was a Linotype salesman. In total 26 years service (Heidelberg took Linotype over).

I now sell aqueous/uv coatings mainly specialist ones for coating things like uncoated paper or jobs with metallic inks, drip off coatings etc I am independant and sell Sun, Stelin, Flint, Vanson and Heidelberg inks plus all the other items required in a press room.

I also buy secondhand pre press, screen, agfa, heidelberg and Kodak etc

                  Thanks

                  Steve

                  • Greetings everyone

My name is Jeff Obermiller, I am the V. P. Manufacturing at Wilen Direct. I have been in Printing since I was a youngster, my entire family are Printers..sigh my sister even married one. So when they say its in the blodd you can believe it.

Printing really is my life, I love the technology and never stop being amazed how fast it is moving. Here at Wilen we like to be on the cutting edge of innovation while holding fast to the main concept of web printing. We were the Beta site for Kodaks new Prosper S/10 printing system...I have only good things to say about the Prosper and only Great things to say about Kodak.
Developing a company is about Partnerships and Kodak is the greatest partner I have had the pleasure of working with in all my years..heh I sound like a commercial.

Anyhow we are about 80% all online VDP combined with all Inline finishing for the converting process...so we go from Roll to Post Office..That is what great technology can do for your Company...I know I know commercial again.

I am happy to be part of Print Planet and will be glad to offer any assistance to my fellow members if I can...I certainly will not be bashful when it comes to asking for your help.
Oh by the way the reason I used "Joe Litho" as my user name is that is what everyone used to say to me..."EH He thinks he's Joe Litho" Heh so I figured it appropriate..

                    Gods Blessings to ALL

                    Jeff

                          • I have been in pre press for 38 years. Seen a lot of changes (anyone remember opaque, rubylith, 10a scalpel blades et al?). Blimey just remembered that we used to have a whirler when I started for coating Letterpress plates and had to scrub them with a power levigator (hmm I am sure that is what it was called) Anyway, had my own Repro businesses and now run the Repro Studio for a Flexo printer. Flexo used to be considered "potato print" standard but how that has changed even in the 5 years that I have been involved in it.

I still love it (sad eh). Always discovering something new and looking for and, hopefully, finding solutions, better ways of working etc.
