3-D printing is more than 2 decades old, but the process has been limited to novelties, prototypes or specialized parts. Now, there's a Print On Demand running shoe from Adidas, with a 3-D-printed latticed sole that looks almost organic, like the exposed roots of a plant.

3-D printing has figured out how to speed up the on-demand process, using cheaper & stronger materials. According to Oechsler AG—a company building factories for Adidas—we can expect a huge variety of everyday objects to be 3-D printed in the next year. Adidas hasn't said how much their 3-D printed shoes will cost, but has indicated they will be priced at a "premium". They expect to ship 5,000 pairs by 2017 &100,000 by 2018.
