According to Reuters, Facebook will start using postcards sent via USPS to verify the identities & location of people who want to purchase U.S. election-related advertising. The process of using postcards containing a specific code will be required when the advertising mentions a specific candidate running for federal office.
Facebook revealed their plans 1-day after Robert Mueller—U.S. Special Counsel—unsealed an indictment accusing 13 Russians & 3 Russian companies of conducting a criminal espionage conspiracy. The postcard verification is Facebook’s latest effort responding to criticism from lawmakers, security experts and watchdog groups that it failed to detect & respond to foreign intervention during the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Facebook said that that sending codes through snail-mail was the most effective method they could find to prevent bad actors from purchasing ads while posing as someone else. The postcards are expected to be in use before the 2018 November, mid-term congressional elections.
