  • It seems unAmerican...

...that an individual could be installed in a government role for life
...that the sitting President - who may have a political agenda to do so - can constrain the specifics of FBI investigations

Sadly, I agree. There's a lot I could say, but, I'm going to keep my big mouth shut. Big brother is watching (and monitoring).

What is unAmerican to me is the way the Democrats in the USA treat President Trump as well as the news media. Talking about an agenda the anti-Trump people have a huge one also. The nominee for our Supreme court has had now 7 FBI investigations total. The big issue is how the Democrats sat on the Ford charges for 2 months which is plenty of time to investigate. I myself support President Trump, I myself do not want socialism in the USA, I myself question the way the FBI treated Trump after her highness HRC lost not only many emails but the job of being President. I am proud to be an American and the way Trump is running it. You voiced your view on what is unAmerican and this is my view.

Not sure who "Big Brother" is - this forum's description: "The Lounge - Come to the lounge to get away from shop talk. All things off-topic belong here."

I guess the life tenure was enacted because most politicians are lawyers/judges themselves. LOL
We have a similar dumb system in Canaduh where a Supreme Court justice, as with all federal judges, has guaranteed tenure during good behaviour. But at least they may only sit on the bench until the age of 75.

AFAIK the scope of the FBI background checks are not public/known.

It’s not a secret. The Democrats were asked by Dr Ford to keep it confidential - which is what they did.

I myself do not want socialism in the USA,
You already have a degree of socialism. I doubt very much that the US could or would ever convert to full blown socialism as that system has not proved viable.

You voiced your view on what is unAmerican and this is my view.
My original post was general and not directed to a specific situation. Government appointments for life - for any government position - seem to me to be contrary to the spirit of the American democracy. Same goes for a President, any President, constraining an investigation by fiat also seems contrary to the spirit of the American democracy.

Agreed. Trump-haters are honestly the most annoying brats. It doesn't take much intelligence to see that it goes both ways. Complaining about one party abusing the system without stating that both parties are doing the exact same thing is quite naive.

Gordo Ford's letter was leaked. You are counting on the anti-Trump news for your information it looks like. Read between the half tone dots man. Not sure fiat constrained the investigation or if that is slang term like AFAIK please enlighten me.

                Ok, my 2 cents:

                WHY do we have parties?

WHY do we need anyone to represent us at all?

Our form of government was established at a time when it took a citizen 2 months to ride from Tallahassee to Washington on horseback. That's why we needed to elect "representatives" to go to Washington and make decisions in our best interest. It would be physically impossible for us to do that ourselves. There were no phones, no televisions, no cell phones, and no internet.

In today's world of hyper-fast paced communication, why can't we represent ourselves?

Have a TV channel dedicated to upcoming legislation. Have the Pros tell us why we should vote yes. Have the Cons tell us why we should vote no. And then, we make our own decision, either by going online, or dialing a phone number. No underhanded deals, pork-filled bills, corrupt politicians.

I'm not democrat, and, I'm not republican. I'm American, and, in my opinion, what's been going on up on the hill for decades is just pure buffoonery.

Yes Ford's letter was leaked. It is not known by whom. So you're making an assumption based on your viewpoint.

You're also assuming that I'm counting on the anti-Trump news for my information. That is not correct. I look at a variety of news (US and Overseas) and opinion sources and try to make some sense of what's going on.

"Fiat" simply means "by proclamation or decree". For example, Royalty and dictatorships typically rule by fiat.

In the case of The FBI's investigation of Kavanaugh, the President set the constraints of who and what would be investigated. That is normal procedure since it wasn't a criminal investigation. Unfortunately, at this time, no one outside of the President's office and the FBI, knows what constraints on the scope of the investigation were put on the FBI by the White House. There is speculation of course. I don't think that it's unreasonable to assume that the White House, since it has a vested interest in the outcome, would carefully choose what areas of investigation it would direct the FBI to pursue. For example, in this process, the FBI, would not pursue a line of enquiry if they were to discover evidence that Kavanaugh stole money from the Yale coffers since that was not within the defined scope of the investigation as directed by the White house. i.e. the FBI tries to answer the questions specified by the White House - and is not authorized to go beyond that. That is likely why the FBI did not speak to former classmates who have contradicted Kavanaugh’s account of his college alcohol consumption nor to high school classmates who could shed light on untruths in Kavanaugh’s Senate Judiciary Committee testimony.

I'll interject and say that I am neither pro or against Kavanaugh. I have not done enough reading to merit a sound judgment on him, but so far it seems like he's a nice guy that is caught up in some politically-charged bullcrap. We'll have to rely on our justice system to determine his worth.

I'm pro-Trump for the most part, but he isn't perfect and I can't understand people defending him to exhaustion. Everyone has weaknesses.

I did not answer your original post because it showed a bias for binary thinking (reinforced by this post). Binary thinking leads to polarization and, in politics, hyper partisanship. It puts up a barrier to rational discussion and decision-making.
Facts aren't considered - unless they agree with your position - and any appeal to rational intellectual arguments would be fruitless.
I'll speculate that you likely already know what to think about what I say.

Gordo good discussion. Your answer would not reflect well for your position on this board also. I will use Binary thinking when I vote Red and not Blue. Blue are the zero's and Red are number 1.
