If you save/export out an IDML file it will strip out the SmartStream stuff.

    US health insurance unaffordable?

My brother-in-law is a real estate agent and although he works for a respected brokerage in our state, he gets no benefits. He pays in the neighborhood of $3,000 per month for an Obamacare plan to cover his family of 5. I don't know what kind of deductible there is but that is $36,000 per year!

Rip from Adobe suite or the CTP rip?

If you are exporting a PDF from InDesign, there is no trapping being applied.

    dynamic colorbars in Preps

If you are "printing" from Preps make sure the PDF Color Mapping button is selected (under the General tab of the print dialog.) Then under the Color Separations tab you can map the color bars to the desired spot colors used in the art. This only works if the color bar you are using has spot...

General expectations for PDF file size

600 still seems high even for FM screening, but it certainly won't hurt anything (other than increasing your file size as you already know.) Since you've gone through the trouble of using 600ppi, you also need to make sure that your print vendor doesn't inadvertently downsample to 300 in their...

General expectations for PDF file size

I would add that if you start with the default press quality settings, please change the marks offset to be at least as large or larger than the bleed. Otherwise your marks will interfere with the bleed and render it useless.

General expectations for PDF file size

That is a huge PDF. 600ppi is overkill - you can set that to 300. When you say 2400ppi for bitmaps, do you mean 1-bit images (if you open it in Photoshop it would say Bitmap mode)? If it's just a photograph you can set that to 300 as well. Can you post a screenshot of your PDF settings? You...

    Variable Data Alternative to SmartStream

HP offers Composer, which is basically SmartStream on steroids running on a server. You still build your templates just like you are now with SmartStream, then you save out an HPD file - this is basically a proprietary HP zip file containing your SmartStream InDesign template. Copy the HPD to...

Checking focus on Kodak Achieve 800

Thanks, Gordo. If they're still using your old graphics, it just proves that you made them timeless!

Checking focus on Kodak Achieve 800

The issues they have are myriad and no one really thinks it's a focus issue, but since there aren't too many variables from the CTP side I am willing to check it for no other reason than to rule it out before they embark on real troubleshooting. Most of the issues stem from the fact that we have...

Checking focus on Kodak Achieve 800

We have a Kodak Achieve 800, been in service under light use for about 4 years. Is there a way I can check the laser focus? Been having some issues on press lately and while I don't think it's the CTP, I want to rule it out as it should be a simple thing to check. Trying not to open up a service...
