    Matt Beals

Matt taught me a great deal about Pitstop, PDFs, and color management in my early days trying to figure it all out. Rest in Peace Sir!

    Backup xitron sierra rip?

Quitting the RIP (not the client) will trigger a "Do You Want to Backup the Database?" message. Say yes, and navigate to the location you wish to save. I usually click the toggle icon that says "Force Quit" to initiate the shutdown.

Restrict Editing on PDF...with one exception.

The choice in Acrobat Security is worded : "Changes Allowed: Any except extracting pages" Which is opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish, unless it's worded funny and I'm misunderstanding. Thanks Dov. Appreciate your reply.

Restrict Editing on PDF...with one exception.

My customer wants to restrict editing on PDF files, EXCEPT leave the ability to extract pages. With the new Acrobat Pro, even a rasterized PDF is easily converted to text for editing.

    CGATS21_CRPC3.icc Profile

We're going to print a job on 100% post consumer paper via heat set web. It's a 50# enviro something or other. It has a coating to give it more of a matte finish. I think the Gracol UNC 2013 might cut back more than we'd like with the 260 ink limit. I found the above profile on ICC website, and...

    Tracking my paper warehouse

I'm wondering what software systems are available to keep inventory of paper rolls and stacks other than the primitive and inaccurate spreadsheet currently in use here. I'm considering a custom Filemaker build. Just wondering how you might handle it.

    Xitron Sierra vs Kodak Prinergy

Hi Al, We have been using Xitron Sierra over 7 years, and are very happy with it. It is a complete workflow, and yes, the APPE is the only way to go. I would be happy to give you detailed specifics if you want to PM me. We ran Agfa prior to Sierra. We were never Prinergy users, but we did run...

Switching from InDesign back to Quark??

I have a customer who wants to switch from CS5 back to Quark Xpress. They hired a new designer who is "experienced" (meaning over 50) and knows and loves Quark. I think Quark can export a good PDF for me, but what pitfalls should I expect? This is a beautiful 4C magazine printing offset. I have...

    mobile proofing

We're starting to hear plenty of requests for ipad etc. compatible online proofs. Unfortunately Kodak Insite Creative is not offering. (Insite used w/prinergy is available if I understand correctly. So what's out there besides the major workflow add ons? Anything?

    Creative Cloud thoughts

In our situation, this will cost Adobe income. Instead of purchasing 5 licenses for CC, we will be riding CS6 into the grave, and adding one seat of CC to handle the jobs that require it. Our customers all send us PDFs except for a rare few. Someone mentioned their customers are afraid to export...

Looking for Prepress workflow that offers Online proofing.

We use Xitron's Sierra. Ironically, we use Kodak Insite Creative for softproofing. They issued a patch to allow Smart Review to work with Java 7. It's certainly a hassle when workflows break because of JAVA or an OS update. We fought through Insite not working with Snow Leopard for quite awhile...

    mac mini w/snow leopard server?

We are currently using a power PC (10.4.11) version of Xserve. Since Apple quit making the Xserve a year ago, we are looking at replacing it with either a couple of mac minis with server installed, or a mac pro running server. Is anyone running the mac mini server? Is it adequate for a prepress...

    Epson 4900/Fiery RIP?

We need to upgrade our proofer from an Epson 4800. The only target I care about matching is a SWOP2006#3sheet and only one paper. Our current proofing RIP doesn't support the 4900, and it could cost me $$$ to upgrade everything. Looks like I can get a new 4900 with a Fiery for about $3000. Will...

    Workflow vs Kodak

We are using Sierra from Xitron (same as Fuji XMF) and love it. In my view, we all defend what we've spent so much time learning, and money acquiring. Of course the Kodak lovers will defend Prinergy. We have Kodak Insite Creative for online proofing/collaboration. We have found Kodak to be...
