    Indigo Ink Transfer

When ink transfers from the Indigo blanket, does the ink split in some fraction, like offset and letterpress, or is it 100%? I don't see the little filaments of stringy ink on an indigo print. Has Indigo demonstrated this anywhere? Just curious. John Lind

    Sappi paper problems

If it happens on one sheet but not every sheet, look for a pattern of every 4th or 5th sheet. This would indicate sheeting from multiple rolls, which is common. That is hard for the mill to deny as a claim. Document and photograph. SAPPI is a premium sheet and you should expect the BEST! John Lind

    iGen Security Printing

I'm curious whether an iGen can print marks similar to a void pantograph. I know they can do a GlossMark, and a fluorescent black light reveal mark, but what about a Void? Thanks in advance iGen users. John Lind Print Consultant (fancy salesperson)

    Ink suitable for LWC stock

LWC paper usually means a 30 or 40 pound sheet that is used for magazines and printed on heatset web offset presses. The inks are very low tack, so that the web isn't broken and all sorts of debris isn't piling up on the blanket. I guess you can run this light on a sheetfed press, I've seen it...

    One last question about Indigo

Well, why don't you ask HP to run your most critical job on the same machine you might buy and slit it with the Rollem. Seems like this would answer the question. Run the same job 5 times to view registration repeatability. No question the HP is a fine machine, but I've heard of register issues...

    UV Coating & Lamination

Like foil stamping, you would have to try it. But, depending on the type of UV coating, it could be too "slimy" for the film to adhere. UV coatings contain monomers, oligomers, initiators, and a material called a "synergist". This last is sometimes an amine, especially in the lower cost UV...

    Press Lubrication

Curious whether anyone in cyberpress world has ever tried a product called Motorsilk in their printing press(es). According to what I have recently seen in a slide show at viridissolutions.com, a printer might be interested in this for a few possible reasons: 1. Lubrication is greatly improved...

    Security Printing

Security Printing. Security Printing. I think there are patents concerning the VOID Pantograph use, and you may need a license to use/do it. I would look at Standard Register, but there may be others. But you are right about how it's done

FM Screening and Ink film thickness

Gordo: Those are fascinating "mappings". Thanks for sharing that. Very wise to not commit on the fountain solution. Of course there will be linting, which is the same as non-image piling as I recall. Some blankets have better release. The stochastic phenomena related to screens during the GATF...

    Ink quality

Ink Quality and Ink Film Thickness Ink Quality and Ink Film Thickness From the first day I started work at GATF, this was a subject of interest. In the end, ink film thickness was measured, if you believe in the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. 1. Weighing paper with ink on it, forget it. 2...

    Is Microtext useful on offset?

Microtext Microtext I suggest that you read a book called "Dangerous Doses" by Katherine Eban. There's a lot more money in counterfeiting pharmaceuticals (and their packages) than good old currency. Lot more dangerous for the public too. I think an Indigo will print more crisp microtext than...

How to tell the difference between UV & Aqueous

If the coating is orange-peel-like, then it is probably UV, cured before it could level out or it didn't wet the inks beneath it properly. Maybe the inks had wax in them, or it was a cheap UV coating. Or it was over cured. One thing for sure, the price was right for the national retail chain...

    web offset training

I think you have one choice left...Rochester Institute of Technology. Now, there might be some press simulation training modules which would be very helpful, can't remember the name of that company, but I think it is out of France. GATF (remember them?) helped to develop that stuff (PrintSim?)...

    Roller cleanning and hardness

You can visit the web sites of the roller manufacturers and get hardness recommendations from their sales sheets. Try Acorn, Bottcher, Diamond. John Lind Cranberry Township, PA 724-776-4718

    Print Consistency (and TVI)

Tarun: In the days of SWOP specifications, and dot proof verification sheets, a TVI range of +/- 2% was usually given. If you are a consultant, testing a brand new press for consistency, the TVI expectation might be shrunk to +/- 1% over a steady state run. This is measured sheet to sheet over...
