OKI Consumables a Year After the Pullout.

I looked at my 931 webpage since I was getting ready to put an order in for supplies and it shows an error for the black drum, I remember a few weeks ago it giving a replace error and I pulled it out and put it back in, probably done another 10-15k through it since then, I have another 5000 piece job to run through it in the morning so will see if it forces me to replace it or not. Not sure if this is a fluke or not.

1i look forward to hearing how that goes.

Still trucking along with it sitting at 0% Black Drum Fuser life. Run about 4000 so far and have another 4000 to do tomorrow. Most of the time other operators are running it and when it comes up with the change warnings they just change them so this time I was able to see how long it will go on 0%.

Can anyone tell me if OKI c931 drum/fuser/belt life are hard stops, or can they be used beyond life? Is life calculated on hard clicks or inches (page width)? If a drum is good for 40k based on letter clicks, then it should be capable of 80k #10 LEF. But if it's hard clicks, you are tossing a drum half-way through its life. Same with fuser and belt. Our Xante (Ricoh engine) would run at 0% until you replaced the component. We easily doubled the life given count.
Ours is hard stops, when it says change it, I can pull it out and put back in and get a few more, than that is it. We have had some problems with poor consumable drum, and a toner that had a missing piece on it and it would not work. Oki would not refund, because it was on the shelf more that 3 months!

Many thanks to all for the feedback. We found a great deal on a C931 with feeder and conveyor. Should be good enough to get our feet wet and build some volume to where an Astro/Mach/iJet will be practical. Our local supplier's prices for consumables ae very good, and re-chipping the drums should keep costs down to about .031. We'll see how well that guesstimate holds in real time. Cheers.

Please post an update after you've put some good mileage on it. Curious to see how it works out for you. What sort of volumes are you expecting to do each month?

I have no clue what to expect for volume. We are a mail house and have been getting requests from clients to do 4cp and variable. We have 90% trade clients and most don't have digital envelope capability beyond Konica or Indigo. They have said either one is a last resort in most cases. We have direct clients who do short run 4/0 envelopes that are costing a fortune to run offset, and then we end up inkjetting. Now we will be able to do it all in one pass and save them some money while bringing that print revenue in-house. Almost all trade clients have expressed a need for 4cp variable. None of them have enough to justify their own machine, but combined they should be able to keep us busy once their clients know it's available. I have seen many envelopes come through here that would make great variable pieces. I favor variable image because it has more impact when used properly. We also have been passing on some high-end projects because we lacked the quality needed. We can now do those. I will be marketing like crazy. The first job will be our own mailing.

Now if we can just get some envelopes that the quality is not crap. The last few pallets of envelopes we have gotten in have sucked, the QC is non existent for Printmaster envelopes, tons of them being over glued so they stick together and flaps coming out of the box already glued, not fun times in envelope land.

We just sent a bunch back to the client because we couldn't insert them. Not only glue issues but folded improperly.

Watch out buying one with the white toner. It still uses a little bit of white toner with every print. We barely use it and noticed the remaining level was getting lower and lower. The tech told us it's to keep the 5th station components cycling to prevent imaging issues when you do need to use it. He showed us where we can turn that off in the settings.

Hey. Where in the settings can you turn this off?

  1. Press the "Menu" button (up arrow on front panel)
  2. Go to "4. Admin Setup"
  3. Type in the admin password, which is defaulted to "aaaaaa". Do this by typing 2 OK, 2 OK, etc
  4. Go to "Color Setup" on page 2
  5. Go to "5. Spot Color Print"
  6. Select "2. Disable"
  7. It will then prompt you to restart the machine. You can do this from the front power button instead of the rear power switch.
