    Proofreading marks

That's true. Back then there was a formatter position that communicated edits (ACs or PEs) to typesetters either in the original manuscript or corrected galleys. I still like the marks and find them handy, even if I need to explain them once in a while.

    Proofreading marks

Does anyone in the printing industry ever use proofreading marks? I used them often in the early 1980’s for a print shop that typeset galleys for Silicon Valley technical manuals. They were very useful in getting edits done correctly. The marks were shorthand for insert, move text, align...

    Industry Bleed Standard

Crop marks are great in the pdf if the client doesn't provide a file that's exactly a quarter inch larger wide and tall, providing an honest 1/8 inch bleed. I often need to manipulate a pdf in InDesign, so I start by importing the original version with crops for placement. Later I replace it...

    You know you're old when . . .

As a typesetter in the early 80's, the CRT was part of my "dumb terminal" networked from "the mainframe" in the computer room. Inside one could also observe a Rapifax machine, evolving into common fax machines a few years later.

Over 50 unemployed Prepress Tech, should I call it quits for printing?

Don't know if you did prepress for offset or digital. I made the transition to digital about 10 years ago and brought a lot of useful printing knowledge to my direct mail firm. It amazed me how my younger colleagues didn't know about printing basics like backup registration, imposition, grads...

    KM C6500 supplies

Would they happen to be TN616? Ours is a KM 7000 -- a similar model. Thanks!

    Riso Comcolor

gregbatch - in our case the jam would occur before getting to the exit tray. Kringle - Cannot recommend it for printing on back flaps. We're a mailing house and the return address is always left upper corner.

    Riso Comcolor

I've used the Comcolor 7050R for about 5 years now for primarily envelope runs of 1000 or less. It can handle #10 and #9 non-window envelopes and 12 x 18 cover stock well and duplexes the sheets with no problem. But I really dread jamming, cause once it starts, it is very hard to right the ship...

    Does anyone use Quark anymore?

Quark was king back in the 90's with Pagemaker a worthy competitor, but alas, nowadays there is uncertainty if or why it still exists. I think when Adobe Creative Suite came out it was the beginning of the end for QuarkXpress.

Old PP or New PP - Weigh In All

Right. The font could be a point size bigger and maybe medium face instead of light to help out deteriorating eyesight like mine.

    The end of negative film?

Wow, it's a time warp. I worked with a similar imagesetter & processor up until 10 years ago. I wish you luck trying to keep on keepin on.

Where do local printers get their customers?

Of course a professional looking website never hurts. But as a mailing house/print shop, clients who start out using our mailing services are often inclined to have their letters, mailers and postcards data-merged and printed here to make it a package deal.

    Canon 7010vp Printing Method

Yes. We have been importing pdfs that way for five years. We tried using the hot folder at first but it wasn't working for us. Believe it or not, we still are using CW4, since shortly after the install, CW5 crashed and we couldn't get it back. Maybe CW5 has improved the ability to drop files --...

    Canon 7010vp Printing Method

In Command Workstation, we always import jobs rather than sending a pdf using the driver. We noticed a color difference early on and saw we needed to be consistent.

    Acrobat XI Trim Marks Bug

Actually, I usually don't do a preflight. The reason being we're all digital here so I'm free of many concerns encountered by CTP offset press folks. I do preflight when I see transparency, flattening, etc. issues occuring on the Canon 7000, but that isn't often. But since so many of our...

    Acrobat XI Trim Marks Bug

PDFs with crops and printer marks almost always cry out for the Acrobat Touch-up object tool. When I impose the page later I don't want them possibly sneaking into the image area.

printer for short run #10 envelopes

Our Riso Comcolor 7050R will do closed-flap envelope short runs pretty well up to 1000. The trick is to use envelopes fresh from our paper supplier. Envelopes which have been subjected to moisture mean jamarama time.

    PDF and Open Type Fonts

Just ran a quick test on OTF Vivaldi font. It displayed in the pdf properties as a True Type embedded subset not as an OTF.

    PDF and Open Type Fonts

In what way are they not supported in PDF? We have a pdf workflow here and as long as the Open Type font is embedded in the pdf it should be fine. Anyway, I've never had a problem with them.

    Introduce yourself!

I've been with this printing/direct mail shop for six years. The printing is largely done with variable data on a Canon C7000 for color and Konica Minolta machines for b/w. FusionPro is our data app and workflow is exclusively pdf, although we often work with customer native files to start. I...
