    Estimating offset printing cost

Because a sunk cost isn't a variable cost. When somebody says 'cost' they mean variable cost. I'm not saying that fixed costs don't matter, just that they don't matter when calculating the variable costs of a single job - which is the task at hand. Google 'sunk cost fallacy' for more information.

    Estimating offset printing cost

That seems really convoluted. Cost is cost. Utilizing a sunk cost does not save you any money. (e.g. I paid $5 to rent this movie, so I'd better watch the whole thing or I'll be losing $5). Amortizing sunk costs into production costs is a valuable mental exercise, but don't confuse it with...

    Estimating offset printing cost

I second what arossetti says. You need a lot more revenue. I like to think of offset pressing in terms of the digital pricing model. I assume you don't have a full-time, dedicated operator for each digital press. If so litho press, including the operator, will have a lease payment of roughly...

    Not Our Fault

The health insurance premiums for my company have gone up almost 70% since the PPACA became law, about $100,000 per year more than they were. (CPI shows 13% over the same period.) Who bears the responsibility for that? Where do people think that money comes from?

    Gracol 2013 Proof Paper

Thanks Stephen, but I haven't been able to find a dealer for the Oris paper. It blows me away, but all the main offerings are still the old 2006 spec (95,0,-2). Yet our litho paper decidedly matches the 2013 spec (95,1,-4). This is backwards. I'm starting to think it would be easier to find...

    Gracol 2013 Proof Paper

I'm looking for aqueous inkjet paper that matches the white point specified in Gracol 2013 (Lab=95, 1, -4). Can anybody point me to a supplier? Thanks!

    Does This Price Sound Reasonable????

That's basically materials x2. It sounds like gang run pricing to me. I'm sure their color will turn out just fine......

Speeding the Shift to Inkjet from Offset

"The CTO of the operation says there is no reason to ever buy another offset press" "Even the best inkjet presses do not necessarily deliver print quality that matches offset" "And now the relatively low [when compared to toner] cost of inkjet is making those economics far more practical" One...

    Happy Birthday Canada

No, Upper and Lower Canada were British provinces. Before it was the country of Canada, it was a possession of Great Britain, before that it was a possession of both Great Brittian and France. But the limeys ran the French off before the American revolution . . . which was one reason, among...

    creative cloud subscription a ripoff

I think you're trying to trick me into admitting something here lol! Actually we need all three subscriptions - they're installed on a total of 6 devices (2 per account) just as Adobe permits. Which reminds me, with the CC for teams, you get to use the subscription on two PCs plus one mobile...

    creative cloud subscription a ripoff

We have 3 CC subscriptions at $55/mo each. Adobe keeps calling me to get me to switch to CC for teams. It has the tremendous advantage of being able to manage all of my subscriptions with one login (this is apparently a monumental achievement in Adobe's mind). It also comes with a bunch of free...

    The High Quote

"I assumed you'd have this printed in China, where they have essentially no emissions standards, safety standards or worker safety nets." If we're all ok with skipping the pretty stuff above to get lower prices, why can't we skip all that stuff in the US too? If all the above is necessary when...

    Explosive rant

Why bother with actually developing and supporting a product when you can just buy all your decent sized competitors? After you're done with that, integrate vertically so the externalities imprison your customer just as much as your monopoly position. Imagine what companies like EFI and Abode...

    Explosive rant

I used CWS on an old Xerox DC and free flow on an iGen. That's like choosing between being shot or being hit by a bus. The front end on the Nexpress dances circles around both of them. I had to suffer through a decade of Colorproof xf and the ridiculously buggy interface. Fiery XF was an...

Watching the US wrastle with healthcare

The only reason health care is so screwed up today is because the government has already mangled the markets for both care and insurance. Neither resembles anything close to a free market. The feedback from pricing has been completely destroyed. I don't understand why people think certain...

    The Job Offer

Employers have been placed in the position of making a single insurance decision for all their employees. The interests of a healthly, single 25 year old male and a nearly retired 64 year old married female are quite different. Fortunately in the US, the government essentially does not allow...
