Please Help a total Newbie out

Mikey, A third option is to create your design for your paper so that you can get base runs of the layout printed at a 4 color offset house. Once you have these, you can print the daily information (date, articles, photos) onto the base running it through a black only laser printer or using a...

    Font Explorer X Reflow Problems

Here's one for you. This has happened with both the free version of Font Explorer X 1.2.3 and the trial version of Font Explorer X Pro version 2.5.2. Running on a Mac with OS 10.6.6. Type flows differently depending on whether you activate the font set before you open the file vs. opening the...

    Avantra Film Processor Slime

Someone once told me, and I've never tried it, to put Listerine or some other kind of mouthwash in the water. Not sure if it works or not, but at least your processor will smell minty fresh.

It's kind of sad that you actually have to do this for them. They should be taking the lead on this, especially if they expect you to print their jobs in a timely manner.

If you're the first responder to the post, it's not necessary to quote the entire friggin' question. We can all assume that you're answering the post for god's sake.

A Publishers Nightmare: Problems with a Large Print Run

To me, that's completely unacceptable. It's ink on paper for crying out loud. It's not rocket science to make sure everything is printed, folded, bound and trimmed correctly. If they had so many issues with a simple magazine, maybe they should get out of the printing business. (Which they...

Looking for 3D PDF page flip software solution

If you have InDesign, you can do this. It's really easy. It's under Window>Interactive>Page Transitions. Here you select what effect you want (flip, fade, wipe, etc.) after selecting this, you can then export as an .swf file and you're done.

White text on rich black background?

My apologies. Sounds like he's a real peach. I don't blame you for wanting to switch printers. For him to not even offer you a solution gives good printers bad names. I had no idea that it was that bad of a situation you were in. It sounds like he is the one who should be taking a class. My...

    Epson workflow for Newsprint simulation

You should be able to set up your color profiles on your proofer to simulate newsprint without actually having to run the newsprint through it. Basically, you'd set up a profile that would add yellow/magenta to simulate the color of the newsprint stock that the job will actually print on. We've...

    Trading Card Game?

Any full service printer can help you. What you're asking for is not unusual at all. Just tell them that you want the cards printed, foil stamped and coated (more than likely a spot aqueous) and they should be able to help you select all the appropriate paper, etc. and help you set up your files...

White text on rich black background?

I don't think changing printers is the answer. Better education on your part might be the better route. For someone in print designing to have "have absolutely no experience with trapping but have heard it mentioned before" is actually kind of scary (although not unusual at all). Most people I...

    Litigation copying/scanning

Another consideration is who would be responsible for checking the copy for accuracy after the OCR. I'm sure since it's litigation, it would have to be pretty accurate.

    vacation time ?

Same. 2 "business" weeks. 10 days. But a lot of companies are changing terminology to a more ambiguous "PTO - personal time off" to avoid the legislation that an employee has to have a certain amount of allowable "sick" days. By calling all time off "PTO" and not defining certain days as "sick"...

    Backup solution for Prepress files??

As far as how long you keep files. We keep files up to 5 years old. Anything other than that, we dump. Another idea is to burn the job to DVD's when the job is printed and shipped and returning it to the client so that they're responsible for keeping the files so you don't have to worry about it.

    Backup solution for Prepress files??

We use AIT tape for backup. You can get a lot of data on them and they take up very little physical space. Backing up on a offsite "cloud" storage could become really expensive. Plus, you have the drawback of the download/upload speed of the data transfer. On the plus side, with cloud or offsite...

    Newbie VDP mailer

You can also used InDesign to do your variable data merge using a scanned copy of your mailer as a template. Once you get it set up, all you have to do is marry it with the data file and InDesign will generate a page for each file. You can then either print directly to a printer that has your...
