Which design program do you prefer if you had to chose between these two, and why?

Honestly, like any other program, in the right hands it's wonderful. In the wrong hands it's a disaster. Personally I prefer Illustrator. Mostly because I'm more familiar with it and it integrates better into the rest of the Adobe Suite. I know years ago there were issues with Corel and...

    2D Code Help

Try removing the quotes from around <tab>. The quotes should be telling the program what is enclosed is text and not a function.

Guillotine pressure and few sorts of paper, help needed..

Use more pressure on coated stocks than uncoated. More on text weights than cover. We cut 90% of all we do on 1500psi. The problem with thicker softer stocks is the clamp will leave a mark on the sheet with too much pressure. However, not enough pressure and you will see knife pull. Sometime you...

I can't do this swoosh - can you? Or can you tell me how?

Looks like something on Xerox. Go find a PDF from them and see if you can pull it out of it.

    What constitutes a different postcard

Your "mail" person is wrong. The only thing the post office will care about is that they are all the same size, weight, thickness and that they are addresses properly with the correct indicia or stamp. What's actually on each card does not matter to them. We've done projects where not only...

    Indesign Cs6 Disappearing text

FYI I found out what was doing it. Using the "Change All" button in the "Find Font" pallet. It's not consistent as it only made the error two out of ten times. Be it certainly is the cause. So be very leery of the "Change All" button in Indesign.

    Indesign Cs6 Disappearing text

In the last month we've had two jobs now "go bad". In both cases there is text that was originally there that is now not. In the first it is page numbers on three different pages. Text box is still there, but the text is now gone. It was originally there as the first round or two of proofs had...

New magnetic Laser-compatible stock - Digital Magnecote

I ran it on a NexPress. Had to have a special "kit" (strips of magnet stock) to get it through the registration board. Aside from that it printed just like a coated cover stock.

    New system

The shop I was at had a 14x20 GTO 52, a Ryobi 3302, a QM46 and a Halm. On runs over 25,000 on the GTO we would make two sets of plates. They were very sensitive if the wrong chemicals were used and was the cause of most of the remakes. I can't recall what it was. I know the gum system was crap...

    New system

I used a Plate Writer 2000 for three years. We did lots of single and spot color printing as well as down and dirty commodity process work. What sort of printing are you doing? Be advised it only does stochastic dot. Yes they will tell you there is an option to get a true halftone dot...

Need to print large book covers

I think your going to have to go offset as the biggest digital machines like the iGen, NexPress, Indego & Screen are all 66 cm.

How to simulate spot varnish on a proof?

Never tried to simulate them, just indicated where there are with a tint of yellow or orange. This was done on the mockup on cheap offset stock though and not on the contract proof.

    New Prepress Computers

iMacs are fine, load them with memory and get the ones that have the most Vram on the video card. Really the only advantage I saw of the Powermac is because they have PCIX slots you can get some pretty fierce video cards to put in them. It may not sound like much, but the speed at which a...

    Electric clamp or hydrualic?

Not sure how it's handled on electric cutters, but I know all hydraulic cutter have the ability to adjust the amount of clamp pressure. This is important when you don't want clamp marks on softer stocks, or when you need more pressure on coated/slick finished stocks.

    Difference between ink and paint

Paint and Ink are very similar to each other actually. The differences really come down to the make up of each. Dryers, leveling agents, stiffness opacity and such. If you wanted you could use ink to paint your wall, or use ink with a brush to paint an image on canvas. Though you'd find it...

    InDesign or Illustrator

Illustrator is capable of saving a proper PDF for prepress. Placing the AI files into one Indesign file will make it easier to deal with in Prepress for most shops. As with everything you should consult with your printer before you get to deep into the project to be sure your setting up your...
