Looking for an artworker/prepress job in Scotland!

Hi there! I've been away from the site for a while, and that's because my job got credit crunched away last summer. The first thing I did was take a good long sabbatical, and now I'm ready to get back into the industry. I've worked in agencies, in prepress and in print management, so I know the...

Converting PDF to bilevel (automatic solution)

Thanks everyone. The scans are only 150dpi, but that doesn't matter as it's only one working copy I want to print – it's not a commercial job. It's getting rid of the colour cast that's the issue. I will go the export, batch process, and recombine route.

Converting PDF to bilevel (automatic solution)

I have a 600 page PDF document (it's a scanned book) with a colour cast (brown text on yellow). What is my best approach to getting black text on white? I have been playing with the Convert Colors... feature in Acrobat 8 Pro without success. Is there some sort of extreme colour profile I can...

    Graphic Designers job?

Re: Graphic Designers job? To me, a designer who doesn't think about how the file is going to be printed is like a chef who doesn't care whether his kitchen is clean or not. Making proper files is ABC. It comes BEFORE making things pretty. Of course, some printers continue fixing the files for...

    Quartz filters and smooth shading

Re: Quartz filters and smooth shading I did find someone mentioning that Quartz doesn't support smooth shading at all, but that was back in 2001. Is this still true?

    Quartz filters and smooth shading

Is anyone using Apple's Quartz filters to automatically generate low-resolution PDF files and/or thumbnail images? I have the problem that the filter chokes on smooth shadings and leaves them out of the generated PDF or JPEG. I don't know why this is happening, but since our client's logo...

    InDesign: Import XML via AppleScript

is it possible for InDesign to import XML from a string in memory as well as from a file? I'm generating XML from an AppleScript and controlling ID from the same one, so it would be nice not to have to write a file and read it in again. I know about "import XML from +file+" What I want to do...

Color Builds for Body Copy and small print.

Re: Color Builds for Body Copy and small print. I think that CTP has improved the general quality of registration and plates so much that you can often get away with four color builds even of small type -- at least in sheet-fed litho. We recently did something with a line of 6pt Helvetica...

Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP

Re: Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP Returning to this issue as it's happened again recently. We tracked it down to an operator opening the file in ID CS3 and exporting it from there. Experiments showed that it was not a corrupt document or fonts. We found that...

XML into InDesign -- paragraph breaks?

Re: XML into InDesign -- paragraph breaks? Answered my own question -- seems this happens when I select the "Do not import contents of whitespace-only elements". I thought that one would strip out all the empty elements, not the breaks between elements. Ah well.

XML into InDesign -- paragraph breaks?

I'm trying to import an XML file and map it to styles in InDesign CS3. Every time I import the file the paragraph breaks (aka hard returns) get changed to plain line breaks, meaning that I can't apply different paragraph styles to different tags, since as far as ID knows the text is all the same...

All the things that can go wrong with Word files

I'm wondering who has tried and tested workflows for dealing with MS Word files to get usable PDFs for four colour print from them. We're often getting Word files of unknown provenance. Sometimes they already reflow when we open them in Word 2004 on the Mac. The users are clearly not...

Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP

Re: Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP I set the PDF level to 1.3 rather than 1.4. I don't know why this cured it -- in my view it shouldn't have! I'm inclined to think the InDesign document is corrupt in some way, as other documents work fine with the same...

Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP

Re: Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP No transparency, and I've already found a solution/workaround, thanks. I'm just interested in how it could happen in the first place.

Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP

Re: Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP No, the text is blue (on a white i.e. paper background) and overprint is off.

Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP

Re: Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP I took the liberty of sending Michael the file off-board. There are just a couple of graphics and some text, and according to Acrobat 8.0's preflight the fonts are embedded. I'm quite intrigued by this file.

Odd bug -- type in PDF appears on screen but disappears on the RIP

I recently had a PDF file created by InDesign CS which displayed perfectly on screen, but when we ripped it the text disappeared. It's a really simple two color document (compliment slip). I'm inclined to think this is a bug, as if I wanted to reproduce this behaviour I wouldn't know how. It...
