    Mac or PC?

Use whatever platform works for you and your processes. I rarely see designers using PC's unless they are in a large corporate environment. I won't use anything but a Mac for prepress work but it's what I know after 30 plus years. Find OS X to be a much more elegant, trouble free environment...

    The Job Offer

Had an awesome family plan several years ago -$250 per month. No yearly increase for years. Very low or no co-pays. Prescriptions covered 100%. Never paid for ANY medical care. Then the government got involved... Benefits coordinator stood up in front of our group and clearly stated your plan...

Where Have All The Printers Gone?

Well believe it or not company I am with DOES export printed product to Mexico from the US. It not huge volume but it's worth our while. It's a for a US based company that has facilities in Mexico and apparently they can find no "domestic" source for this product. Specs for this product are very...

So I tried... (Adobe vs CorelDraw)

One Corel Draw advocate among dozens of Adobe advocates; reflects current marketshare for better or worse. Use whatever tool gets the job done in your environment. David makes very compelling arguments for CD - in HIS work. We use AI native files 99.5% of the time. Very rarely open Acrobat or...

    Branding your work?

Quite common in folding carton business to place printers logo on a glue or tuck flap that is not visible once carton is erected and filled. Recent trend has moved away from that type of branding due to competitive pressures. What does remain is job #'s, die position #'s and various customer or...

NFL Coach Smashes Tablet and Goes Back to Paper

Well I do, every weekend. And yes the NFL is the most popular professional sport in the US but losing viewership this year. The problems with the Surface are purportedly networking issues and not with the tablet itself. Imagine having to compete with the 30,000 plus phones in the stands at a...

A Fascinating Film About the Last Day of Hot Metal Typesetting at the New York Times

Ran one but only in college courses at RIT. First job out of school commercial shop I landed at had 3 of them. As I recall the quality of the type was terrible at least compared to computer typesetters they upgraded to shortly after I arrived. Will check out the video tonight. Thanks for the...

    Help... Process camera vs imagesetter

Haven't used a process camera since school in the 70's and for good reason! If your original image is vector based you cannot get anymore detail of if it than imaging out of your Agfa device at it's highest resolution. The process camera analog steps you describe will no doubt NOT improve image...

    New Labels & Packaging Forum

From a folding carton perspective I would not characterize this market as low hanging fruit. Transitioned from Commercial 8+ years ago and the differences were startling. For many or most customers you'll need: a structural engineer plus software with a cutting table & a score bend tester, die...

Which design program do you prefer if you had to chose between these two, and why?

Same here; have not seen a CorelDraw file is well over a decade. Customers all use Adobe applications. And yes Possumgal a little competition would be welcome!

    Have you ever had...

My first flash inspriration: Back in the middle 80's working as a customer service person and estimator in at NYC sales office fora CT based commercial printer I was having trouble keeping up with volume of quotes. My boss suggested I automate the process by using a computer. Bought a IBM PC XT...

    Carpet in Prepress?

Carpet in half (workstations & Kongsberg table), linoleum tile in other half (servers, platemaking, proofing) here. No added humidity and also no issues static issues. Forced hot air heat. And yes carpet is impossible to keep clean especially with people tracking in ink & dirt from production...

    Is color management really needed?

Agree with Gordo that Apple products are pretty good at displaying achievable color. Problem I have seen repeatedly over the last 25 years is when a designer shows the customer output from their uncalibrated wide gamut desktop printer on stock nothing like the job is printing on. Customer loves...

    Font management recommendations

Using FontExplorer X Pro here for 7 plus years. Pretty solid. Other than building sets and activating fonts it can do cache cleaning, preview, auto activate and searches among other features. Manually moving fonts? Yikes! Most font managers are less than $100 - the ROI is pretty short.

How long have ya been doin' this?

41 years and counting. Feet got damp with a high school graphics arts program in NJ. Friend suggested I enroll after freshman year had started. Funny how one conversation changes your entire life. Hand set type, screen printing, offset litho - great program, excellent teacher! Thanks JT...
