Something that hasn’t been mentioned in this discussion is what kind of ‘production’ do you have? Do you have any offset presses that need plates carried over from prepress? How big are these presses/plates? Or are you a digital only shop, whereas no plates need to be carried to the pressroom?

I think FM screening helps to reduce that due to its using only one small dot size. Smaller dots have consistently less gain and therefore less color variance overall.

Most modern presses and probably all newer presses have the ability to convert and update raw CIP data to correct numbers for the ink keys at press, for any specific substrate. On any press equipped with this technology, it’s simply a question of whether or not the operator has the wherewithal...

I think the biggest problem with this thread might be in the department that’s asking the question. Since PrePress has nothing to do with adjustment of CIP files (it’s100% press-side) you may have the wrong person wondering how to fix any issues there might be with the conversions. Hopefully...

Trying to keep within layman’s terms; if your SID tolerances are set at .08+/-, all colors are then allowed to run over their target densities .08 and are also allowed to run under them .08. That gives you a total possibility of .16 points of color density variation, from color to color...

They’re SIDs, with some very wide tolerance margins posted afterward that are not necessarily industry standards. I think more shops are monitoring Delta E (difference numbers) these days with some shops even chasing them throughout a print run, but scanners and I think photo technology as well...

Personally, I’ve never seen an envelope feeder for a stream-fed press. But I do know that on the SM52s there’s a setting you can change which interrupts the normal sheet-under-sheet stream-fed operation - it’s there specifically for feeding envelopes. Have you tried using that?

The best plates are the ones that only have to be made once, easily roll up on press, and last long enough to complete the run without any issues.

Customers/Clients are also high on the list in many of these threads.

A Durometer is the instrument used to measure the shore hardness of the rubber. The chemicals used for wash-ups are harder on rollers than anything else and are the number one cause for roller glazing and hardening. Try including a roller cleaning gel or paste in some of your wash-ups to help...
