Alright, wanted to get this out because I've been researching this for about 3 months now and my company is about to do an audit to get Tri-certified within a few certifications. I'm going to just list the certifications, if anyone wishes to elaborate on any, whether it be information on how to get it, which brokers offer it, positives and negatives of the certifications, issues or successes with the certification and so on. I hope this will be a great source for people to use in order to get ahead of the curve in order to find the BEST information about whats out there.

In the end, I will hope to use this one post to have all the information gathered in an easy to read and usable interface to make it easier for printers, suppliers, mills, brokers and anyone wanting to get information on what it all means.

Resources to help with Certification and Questions of Sustainability

1) EPAT - Environmental Paper Assessment Tool - provides buyers and sellers of paper products a consistent language and framework to evaluate and select environmentally preferable paper.

EPAT is a data-driven tool that considers key environmental performance indicators across the supply chain of paper production. This includes evaluating the source, manufacturing process and transportation - from the forest all the way through the paper mill.

EPAT was designed and developed by the Paper Working Group – a collaboration of Metafore and 11 leading companies – with the goal of making environmentally preferable paper products more widely available and affordable. EPAT is based on the Paper Working Group’s seven desired outcomes for environmentally preferable paper.

2) Sustainable Procurement of Wood and Paper-based Products (SPWPP) - The World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development have partnered to provide reliable, impartial and technically "easy-to-understand" information to assist sustainability officers and business procurement managers, especially major purchasers of wood and paper-based products, in their purchasing decisions.

3) Paper Profile - Paper Profile enables the paper buyer to make well informed product choices, by presenting figures on essential environmental parameters in an uniformed way for specific products. It is a voluntary environmental product declaration scheme developed and provided by leading paper producers. Participating companies are Arctic Paper, Clairefontaine, Grycksbo Paper, Holmen Paper, International Paper, M-real, Myllykoski Corp., Norske Skog, Portucel Soporcel, PSM, Sappi, Stora Enso, UPM and VIDA Paper.

4) Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) - The Global Reporting Initiative's (GRI) vision is that reporting on economic, environmental, and social performance by all organizations is as routine and comparable as financial reporting.

The Sustainability Reporting Framework - of which the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines are the cornerstone - provides guidance for organizations to use as the basis for disclosure about their sustainability performance, and also provides stakeholders a universally-applicable, comparable framework in which to understand disclosed information.

5) World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) - The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a CEO-led, global association of some 200 companies dealing exclusively with business and sustainable development.

The Council provides a platform for companies to explore sustainable development, share knowledge, experiences and best practices, and to advocate business positions on these issues in a variety of forums, working with governments, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations.

Members are drawn from more than 35 countries and 20 major industrial sectors. The Council also benefits from a global network of about 55 national and regional business councils and regional partners.

Canada’s forest products industry is an $80 billion dollar a year industry that represents OVER 2% of Canada’s GDP. The industry is one of Canada's largest employers, operating in hundreds of Canadian communities and providing nearly 750,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country.
