LifeArt an Australian company, is offering a (grave?) new opportunity for printers to diversify their services into a huge new market as they look for printing groups to partner with. Founded in 2004 LifeArt—environmentally friendly, cardboard coffin producer—created, developed and patented an enviroboard coffin using engineered cardboard. The coffins are designed to surpass weight-bearing standards, and provide a light alternative to MDF & Particle Board coffins.

Around 600,000 coffins are made for the UK alone each year, and 85% of those are used for cremation. These traditional coffins—made by cabinetmakers out of MDF & Particle board—were designed for burial, not cremation. When cremated, these heavy coffins emit large amounts of Nitrous Oxide, that destroys ozone & impacts global warming. Independent Research supports LifeArt’s claim that their coffins use:
- Up to 80% fewer trees to produce, and
- When cremated, emit up to 87% fewer Nitrous Oxides than MDF or Particleboard coffins.

In 2017 they opened an innovation center in Gloucester, for the UK market, and are now on a global expansion path. Their coffins are printed directly onto the enviroboard, allowing families to have any graphic printed on the surface.

LifeArt worked closely with Agfa to test various inks and developed color management profiles for the Agfa Jeti Mira LED & Agfa Jeti Tauro LED. An Agfa Jeti Mira LED press was installed in the LifeArt Gloucester facility where all artwork is preflighted and color matched by Agfa’s Asanti workflow. Their press is further enhanced with varnish print heads for spot or flood-varnish finishes.

According to LifeArt, “With so many people planning their own funerals there’s lot of interest in being able to totally personalize a coffin, choose a unique finish and offer it at an affordable price”.

Cardboard coffins are an environmentally friendly—locally produced alternative—that’s strong, robust and passes all testing. They are confident this will be the future of coffin production, and printers can become an integral part of this future industry.
