Unfortunately I have never really done any scripting before, I have launched the AppleScript editor a few times and tried to record actions without much success. Could you recommend any decent sources on Apple scripting for beginners ?
My other idea was to see if there was any preflight software out there that could spit out a report with the font information in, had look at Acrobat preflighting and Esko check-X but no luck so far
Hi Chief
It's about a slightly different topic, but check out this thread for some good info on learning Applescript.

Flightcheck will check for font info, although I don't know if I'd completely trust the data. I just tested it and saved out a text file with the following info. The HelveticaNeue in this case is the Apple supplied Dfont which according to its get info window is licensed from Linotype.
HelveticaNeue ........... Helvetica Neue.TTF ........ Plain ...... TrueType ...... 1.00 ..... Adobe
MyriadPro-Regular .... MyriadPro-Regular.otf ... Plain ....... - .................. 2.01 ..... Adobe
As previously mentioned, Font Explorer will let you Detect Fonts in a document. It will accept rtf, eps, PDF, indd formats among others. It will show the various versions of a font that are active on your machine, so it might not give you the exact font that was used when the file was created, which could be a problem. It kicked back the following info on my test file (trimmed down a bit for brevity).

It is perfect for international correspondence: no ornament, no emotion, just clear presentation of information. Helvetica is still one of the best selling sans-serif fonts.
