Kodak Plate Processor

We just had a new Kodak plate processor installed (MOA 850).
In the Operator Manual it states; "The user must provide a water supply that complies with local water authority regulations."
The installers mentioned that we should have soft water for the processor.
Does anyone else use soft water for plate processors?
Is it really necessary?

Thanks!

Some plate types are more sensitive to hard water than others. In some systems, hard water causes problems with the coating material dissolved in the "carry over" developer on the plate - which can result in tiny bits of coating re-depositing onto the plate, causing spots on press. Also, hard water can cause scaling on the rollers in the rinse section, resulting in scratches and poor squeegeeing, as well as feed problems.

So - it's clearly a better idea to use soft water... but whether or not it causes problems, and how long before you experience those problems may vary. Sorry there's no clear answer!
