Size of a QR Code

I have a customer that wants to add a discreet QR code to all their business cards. Is there a minimum or suggested size for the QR code? I'm assuming if it's too small it is unreadable

What we have found is that the more information in it the larger it has to be . . we run one out at various sizes and then test is with a smart phone to see if it can be read.

Best thing to start with is a tiny-url to minimize the info needed in the QR. We've gotten best results there, and it allows for a much smaller size QR-say .33" to .5", which can be seamlessly integrated into a design. Most readers now have gotten to the point where contrast doesn't have to be as pronounced as even 6-12 months ago, and the QR can become more of a design element than a static block which everything has to fit around.

The problem we have found is that we have to fit what the customer wants into the QR code . . . they don't like being told that all they can have is 24 characters or some arbitrary limit . . . but then its all a balancing act between what looks acceptable and still has the necessary information.

Is the code directing to a URL? Bitly or use a real qr system that offers shortening and tracking.

If its just text, test is till its small enough that you can't scan it. Then make it a bit bigger:)

smart phones have gotten better in the last 6-12 months but remember to tell your customer its best to work around worst case scenario. You don't want to give a customer something they can't scan or they give to a customer that cant scan it. Using the latest and greatest phone isn't the best practice when testing qr codes.
