Do you run the Heidelberg SM-52 Anicolor press

Michael, did you not say before in a previous post, that Heidelberg was coming back to look into you problems regarding the original set-up. I forwarded you information before and the dampening values were in the low 30 range and that your numbers were very high. Vario is a function that removes hickies from the plate so that they do not appear on the printed sheet. I do not know why tour operator chooses to run without the option.
 
Yes they did come out and look over the press. They told us they would be able to help us and tell us what they found. But we need to go back to the saphira ink and saphira fountain. That would give them a better way to analyze the press and they would also like us to set up an other contract for all of the work to fix the press that they installed. The technicians did not know how to setup the press that they put in. All of that time in the beginning years they new that the setup was not right and now they want us to pay for what they installed.

OK. I am starting to get a better understanding of what has been happening with your situation. You can correct me if I am wrong in another post. When Anicolor presses were installed, Heidelberg certified the inks to be used (Saphira) were formulated to meet certain qualifications to be used on the press. The customer should have been made aware of this. If the customer chose to use ink from another supplier, then Heidelberg would not be responsible for any issues with print performance. The fountain solution was also supplied by Heidelberg on start-up. In my opinion the fountain solution was not as big a potential problem. Heidelberg used a supplier or suppliers to manufacture ink and fountains solutions (Consumable items). These products would have been tested and certified by Heidelberg for use on the Anicolor presses. The press was probably initially set-up with Saphira certified products and the technician or instructor somehow may or may not have done a proper set-up and instruction. If you decided to switch to another supplier for your ink and fountain solution, you may have enhanced the problem to a point where you are way out specification on everything. In my opinion you now have a situation where Heidelberg, has informed you that they need to go back the square one with Saphira products. They will then analyse and assess your problems. Now, from what I understand , they want you to pay for it. If your people feel the press was not set-up properly, that is another that has to be dealt with by the Service Department. I base my comments on your side of the story, and I am sure they have their side of the story. Needless to say you need to resolve these issues to a point that will satisfy all parties involved. Just remember that you are the customer.
 
Hi michael, seems like u have no choice but to do what the heidelberg technicians tells u, i think they are right with the saphira ink but i'm not convince with the fountain, the key is to have a good osmose, a proven fount solution with the specified % of alcohol, u also have to make a kind of print test with the plate u are using, thks

I have been operating a SM 52 since April 2010. It was a new install. We also had our issues for about the first year and a half. Part of it was just inexperience on our part dealing with anicolor rollers, ink, water and press curve problems to name a few. I wanted to point out that it is critical that the pressman be sure to use the vario system. If he doesn't he has to run his water extremely high resulting in constant problems with printing. I personally would not go back to standard presses as this new concept is the only way to go for fast and quick runs. I have found that the majority of our jobs print at 12 to 14 iph. The faster the better it seems. If you use Saphira ink reguarly you may need to increase dampening % as you go along. The ink seems to want to fill in over time in the heavy screen areas. We are currently using Wikoff for most jobs. This ink seems to be little more fluid and forgiving. I've also found that if you keep your roller temp as close to 75% it runs the best. If the temp gets below 60 and above 90% problems begin. My press has over 75 million impressions and going strong. I could write a lot more if time allowed but I'll leave it at that for now.
 
Wyagow, I have customers that had similar issues that you have been experiencing and we solved the problem by converting the presses to run Toray waterless plates. The procedure is not complicated and your ink / water balance disappears while your make ready time and sheet count is reduced drastically. I'm running an xl 75 with saphira S ink, my rollers temperature are between 10-35% on coated paper,it's really an issue cause i have to print at 14-15000 sph to be able to go down in densities and reach the iso standard, what advise can u give me, thks

I think I should give you some background on this press. Back in 2008 when this new Anicolor technology was introduced to the market Heidelberg put this press in our Company at C&S Press in Orlando Fl.. So when the mechanics installed that press they had a hard time on the first install they did. They did not know how to put that type of press together and the install took a long time. It was the first Anicolor they did. So it did not go so well for them it was a learning curve. So after 2008 the technicians has a background on that type of press and all after that went well.

So what ever numbers they put in on that install they did not come back later to update. So on your press the default numbers are set up different. The numbers you show on your display monitors we can not achieve at all. And yes we never knew that our press was not set up right until I started asking for all of your help on the color setup and the display monitors setup. I hope this helps some.

I know that my press was the first press in the USA to have the 10 cell anilox roller. All prev presses had the 8 cell. I have found on my press that it is critical to have the vario on at all times. I even have printed #10 envelopes with them on. Also there are 5 rollers including the pan roller that should be checked. It almost seems like they may have to much of a squeeze resulting in less water transfering to the plate. At the end of every week we put on Recycl 2000 on the anilox rollers and leave it on until Monday morning to keep the cells open and clean. These are just a couple things that come to mind as far as what the pressman could do. It seems like something is extremely out of adjustment given the pic you provided showing 51% ink and 90% water. You most likely still have press curve problem too.

Its funny that here in Illinois there was a gentleman by the name of George who was a folder operator that came from a print co in Orlando. He has since returned to Orlando about a year ago. He mentioned to me that the co he came from had a SM 52 also.

The press came with the 10 cell rollers from the very beginning. Also 1 12 cell roller for running PMS inks. Although we did not see a significant diff between the 10 and 12.

How do u know if the tempetature of the screen rollers given on the console is correct, is there a place where u can check the real values, i've been checking on the technotrans but it doesn't show the same, the press is an anicolor xl75
 
On my press SM 52, you tap the print tower icon and then Additional Devices then screen roller temperature. This will give you the screen roller temp in Farenheit and Celcius. But the numbers that I have been refering to is % on your ink and water screen. My press gives me adjustment between 50 and 100% for ink settings and 0 to 100% for water.

With any Press Inking Roller Train, the temperature needs to be verified via a Infrared Temperature Sensor and not just

rely on the Press Consol Visual Readings.

The anicolor xl 75 is the same as your press but with format B2 , intelistart and automatic change plate, i have the temp reading u told but what i dont know if i can trust them or not, cause i'm having some issues with my densities, i've sent those issues in an earlier post. We are a young team and we r new with the anicolor system, the press has been installed last year and we r still learning it, what i'm saying is that any help will be welcome,.

My experience stopped with the SM52 Anicolor but I am sure some of the same operating procedures still apply. Your console will display the temperature of the Anilox roller. As Wayago stated you will get a reading in % also on your console and a Temperature reading by changing menus. If I am not mistaken you can also check the temperature of the Anilox roller on the Technotrans unit as a cross reference. You could also use a infrared gun to read the temperature of the Anilox as a another method of reference.
