I'd expect that the most critical for the "average" newspaper would be the following:

  • peak plates-per-hour output speed
  • minimum/maximum plate size requirements
  • autoloading requirements (vs. manual feed)
  • resolution required (max AM/FM screening)
  • any footprint restrictions you may have for prepress
  • connectivity to workflow (what workflow, or do you need that too?)
  • run length requirements (to choose a plate to match it), or details on what specific plate it must work with if you're already locked on a specific plate

Cost of course would come into that as well.

For thermal newspaper CTP's, you're looking at Kodak, Krause, and Screen - and depending on your requirements that could narrow down considerably from there. I'm glad to help you understand the Kodak lineup vs. your needs if you can clarify what you're looking for.
