An alternative is not to give the printer a Pantone reference. Give them a physical sample to match or provide them with a LAB value you want the to match.

We have a solution called Equinox that will do everything required for extended gamut printing. This includes enhancing images or converting spot colors to an extended gamut ink set. Feel free to contact me if you want more information.

This is quite simple really. You can do this by saving the image as either PSD or Tiff. You just need to make sure the color mode is CMYK and your extra channels are defined as spot channels. Are of these types can be placed in Illustrator or InDesign.
