I've been working in the same commercial printer since the age of 19. Despite technically having 6 years experience, I was originally hired as an extra pair of hands to help out the production department, and was an assistant (then apprentice) on a part-time basis.
Though I definitely learned a lot, unfortunately the person who trained me only taught me so much. It wasn't until he left that I realized that what he was essentially doing was cherry-picking the jobs that he wanted to do, and teaching me what he didn't. This meant I was often left with the manual labour, with very limited experience with the machines and programmes.
I've now been running the department since March 2020, and have so far gotten by very well juggling all of the work solo, however there have been multiple times where I've hit hurdles and have sought out online forums, youtube tutorials, or sometimes simple trial-and-error, to overcome. I have not yet had to call an engineer, or resort to calling my former mentor, who I now realize was abusing his authority.
Therefore, this account is hopefully going to be very helpful and educational for me going forward.
