Greetings!
I have been in the printing world all my life. When I was born, my parents owned a small PrintShop and Design Firm. They later went on to sell and open an IT Solutions & Apple Authorized Service Provider, where we had a commercial IT niche in supporting Print Shops in 3 states.
I feel I've done a bit of everything in the world of printing - having worked for 4 Print Shops and as President of Operations for my parents IT company, heavily supporting the printing industry.
16 years ago I started in the mailroom hand sorting mail-- you know the grind: bundling, banding, traying, strapping and wrapping skids.
I've operated every piece of bindery related equioptment you can think of-- from shrink wrappers, insertors, windmeils, cutters, scoring units, drill presses and much more.
At the first printing company I joined, starting in that mailroom, I worked my way through bindery and into the press-room, running two HP Indigo Digital Presses. I've found my 'home' at Specialized Printed Products in Fort Wayne, IN, where we operate 2 Canon ImagePress C10,010VP units, an C8000VP, C750 & an Oce Varioprint.
Over the years I've found my niche here at SPP. With my background in IT, I manage every workstation and do repairs/upgrades. I manage our FileShare server and EFI Printsmith Server. I manage our software licenses, upgrades, add-ons and integration-- including our Adobe Creative Cloud. As a passionate designer myself, I am Adobe CS Certified and was also an Adobe Authorized Reseller and Adobe CS Trainer for several years. I'm our in-house Mr. Fix-It. We have a sign hanging in back that says 'Its not working! Get Shane!'. That includes computers & software, but also our bindery equioptment and out-of-warranty presses. We even have a few warranty presses where they'll send us the parts for me to install.
One of my favorite questions is 'how do you just know how to fix all this stuff?' And my answer always seems to surprise, because it's "I don't, but I'm willing to figure it out'. In both IT and component troubleshooting, your almost always going in blind. You have a knowledge of how things generally work and operate, but may not know the exact solution to a problem. Your literal job is to be a problem solver-- and I love it.
I also run our Envelope Production Dept, which has branched off from our main digital printing department. We do a high volume of envelope printing and offer over 250 variations of envelopes. My envelope department consists of toner based & inkjet digital envelope solutions, running 3 Xante Impressias and for the last year's an iJetColor 1175P. When I first started, we had quite a few envelope jobs we subbed out. Now, we run everything in-house and are the facility other shops contract their more problematic envelope jobs too. We run orders as small as 75pcs and as large as 500,000pcs. Those in printing know that envelope printing is a different beast, and I was determined to find solutions for all of it-- from flap printing, full coverage/full bleed, mail merge and pre-stuffed envelopes, specialty stocks like FlipStick closures, remittance form envelopes, tiny coin envelopes to your large 10x13 Catalogs-- and everything in between. We can also print on cardboard and bubble mailers. I manage our Envelope ordering, stocking all common varieties for quick turnaround. Envelope printing has become an area of passion.
As we are in the midst of a building expansion, I'll be working more closely with our Wide Format Dept for which we want to significantly grow, like we did with Envelopes. We run an HP Latex roll-fed printer and a Mimaki JFX Flatbed printer and can print on paper, yard signs, glass, metal and even wood.
I love that this digital age gives us a space like this to support each other and share knowledge. While I've been doing this going on 17 years, ive learned so much from many of the 'grumpy old men' with ink stained hands that came before me, where 17yrs to them feels like nothing. We all have our niche, areas of expertise and equioptment we know like the back of our hand. I'm excited to collaborate and knowledge-share with other printers.
Feel free to drop me a message anytime! My email is also open at
