What Color is a PMS Color - Really

metamerism could be an issue for the D65/10; is the eyeone io uvcut or not; that could be another difference with all the blue light on D65... but that is a speculation. I do not know if UV filters affect D65 more than D50. what I do not get is why there is difference between two digital...

Have you worked on both sides of the divide (press and prepress)?

otherthoughts: deep understanding of the psychophysics of a print shop, from prepress to press to management, and a beautiful topic to bring up! I run around between prepress to press every day of my short career and you describe my thoughts eloquently: respect the pride of the craftsman...

    Ink Saving solution?

Gordo, yes, I can take a punch, but broke some bones lately and stopped all that violence... :) I got to update my info to bird watching or something, and stop speculating like this and run some tests instead. It is just an interesting topic and I use too much imagination on thinking about it. I...

    Ink Saving solution?

Gordo, I would think that the saturation claim falls in line with the testing you describe in this very good post in your blog... the separation carries the "potential" to increase saturation by -hopefully- allowing us printers to raise the density... What I'm thinking is that the objective of...

Users Poll proofing Rips GMG vs Oris

Reply to stargate's question on how to relinearize on EFI... and some ranting. The new 9900 epson would automatically re-linearize itself if you have the online spectro through the EFI v4.0 rip. I haven't seen the old epson 9800 drifting with the EFI v3 rip. We measure the LAB of the solids for...

    color Inconsistencies

Do you have common color settings between vector and bitmap graphics? Do you have documented LAB and grey balance values of what your proof was and what it is now? Or the press inks? The LABs might still be matching, so density would have secondary importance in that case. If you don't have...

    EFI ColorProof XF v4

I just upgraded to 4. What types of bugs do you have? We had an issue with the spot color tables, but it got somehow resolved.

    Epson 7900 / 9900 discussion

We just finished calibrating a new Epson 9900 on three different stocks! It took me just 2 days. This machine is awesome, especially with the mounted spectro. I pressed the autocalibration button through the EFI ColorProofXF Friday evening and came back Monday to see a completed calibration with...

    Colour Books

I do not know of a ready made reference chart, but I like ColorPicker -if i get what you mean- from Gretag, now X-rite. It has the pantone libraries, or the option to input LAB values of a color. Then, you load your ICC profile, whether it is an industry profile or your custom press profile...

    Overprinting Silver Foil (Customer requirement)

You need to get imprintable foil. It is possible... at least on the UV side of printing; don't know about conventional. We have products from three suppliers that have an imprintable (or overprintable) foil product, so pretty much any foil supplier should have something that would work for you...

problems with getting mettalic inks to clean up faster

Try using status I density with polarized filters if you have the instrumentation. They give you a more accurate density reading and you could control your ink film a bit better. Density flats out with status T density and you don't know if you are putting too much or not enough ink.

    Character Building!

our main issue is cheap recycled board causing hickies. some operators pour the tack reducer with a hose... and sometimes you get recycled board that is worse than recycled board. I guess along with the cheap material price, the mills reduce the cost by decreasing quality assurance measures.

    Max K

    Thank you Lukas!

    Max K

Question: what is the recommended max K for ICC profile creation? I'm checking that all the 'standard' profiles in Europe or the US, SWOP, FOGRA or GRACoL, with heavy or medium GCR settings, have a maximum black at either 98% or 100%. I would assume that this is the 'correct' setting in...

    controlling dotgain

why would you have to deal with this?
  19. dimitri

    controlling dotgain

Dummy question: are you running the same density? Are you during makeready? if you stop and start the press trying to figure out what's wrong, the gain will tend to stay high. I wish you were sheetfed to run some book :) Then again, check the stripes of your rollers. How was the makeready done...

    controlling dotgain

What I've found as the most determining factor in decreasing dot gain variation is having a robust maintenance program for the rollers. Apart from that, packing, water settings, craftmanship, speed, fountain solution, solid density levels, pretty much everything affects dot gain.
